BACKGROUND
The USDOE and its contractors, the regulatory community, and public have placed high priority on the mitigation of the release of contaminated surface water and sediments from the PGDP. There are presently a number of industry-standard engineering approaches that have been applied at the PGDP to address releases of contaminated surface water and sediment from industrial and environmental restoration activities. However, those engineering approaches generally involve large expenditures of capital resources and significant time frames for implementation. Recent work conducted by the University of Kentucky Agricultural Engineering Department has identified, implemented and monitored cost and time-effective methods for controlling releases of contaminated surface water and sediments from agricultural, industrial, and mining sites. A study that precedes this project will collect and assess the data characteristic of soil and sediment contamination within a specific PGDP outfall watershed and will identify the appropriate, readily implementable, and cost effective technology to address contaminant releases from that watershed. This study will focus on the demonstration deployment of a readily-implementable and cost-effective surface water and sediment release control technology to address surface water release pathways within a watershed at the PGDP. The deployment will be based on completed performance modeling that accounts for the range of industrial and meteorological conditions encountered at the PGPD.
GOALS
1. Provide field demonstration for readily implementable and cost-effective technologies to address releases of contaminated runoff and sediments from the PGDP.
OBJECTIVES
1. Identify surface water and sediment release mechanisms and pathways for a sub-watershed at the PGDP site,
2. Provide cost estimates for the implementation of recommended surface water and sediment control methods for address soil/sediment and contaminated surface water releases within a sub-watershed at the PGDP.
3. Provide demonstration scale field deployment of recommended control method.
DELIVERABLES
1. Quarterly progress reports.
2. Project progress presentation at quarterly meetings.
3. Provide modeled data and recommendation report identifying specific technology to cost and time- effectively address contaminant releases within a watershed and sub-watershed.
4. Deploy technology & monitor results
5. Final reports assessing the effectiveness of the technology application in the PGDP sub-watershed.
