Project 3: Groundwater Modeling

PROJECT MANAGER

Steve Hampson, Assistant Director, Kentucky Research Consortium for Energy and Environment, University of Kentucky

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS:

Srinivasa Lingireddy, Ph.D, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky

Jagadeesh Anmala, Ph.D., Department of Civil Engineering, University of Kentucky

BACKGROUND

The USDOE and it’s contractors have completed regional groundwater flow and transport models for the PGDP and it’s environs.  These initial PGDP models have been evaluated and independently calibrated through oversight modeling conducted by the University of Kentucky.  Subsequent modeling conducted by the University of Kentucky has focused on evaluation of the effectiveness of proposed remedial technologies on regional and local scales and on the identification of potential pump and treat groundwater remedial approaches.  The initial focus of the current modeling evaluation will be to provide a formal validation of the USDOE’s modeling efforts and to provide formal recommendations for improvements to those models.  Additional focus will be to provide summary analysis of the effectiveness of proposed remedial projects and other possible approaches to the remediation of off-site groundwater contamination at the PGDP.

GOALS

  1. Evaluate the adequacy of existing groundwater models at the site.
  2. Recommend necessary improvements to the models.
  3. Evaluate the potential use of natural attenuation for addressing –off-site dissolved phase groundwater contaminants.
  4. Use the models to evaluate the efficiency of proposed groundwater remediation plans.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Finalize reviews, evaluations, and recommendations from ongoing UK groundwater modeling activities for the PGDP site,
  2. Provide modeling assessment for a range of groundwater remedial approaches  including natural attenuation, hydraulic containment, pump & treat, and source/dissolved phase removal/treatment,
  3. Provide modeling assessment for the efficiency and expected performance of proposed groundwater remediation plans,
  4. Interact with KRCEE personnel working on groundwater remedial projects
  5. Interact with DOE personnel and DOE contractors working on groundwater modeling projects,
  6. Provide an assessment of the adequacy of the USACOE web-based groundwater model for the PGDP.

DELIVERABLES

  1. Quarterly progress reports.
  2. Project progress presentation at quarterly meetings.
  3. Final reports addressing the results of tasks 1, 2, 3 and 6.
