KENTUCKY MAPS

7.5 MINUTE TOPOGRAPHIC QUADRANGLES (DRG)

Scanned topographic maps (digital raster graphics) of Kentucky are available on the web from the Kentucky Division of Geographic Information and their Kentucky Geoportal and the Kentucky Geological Survey (SEE INDEX)

The old Kentucky Geospatial Data Download Site is still available, but is no longer updated.

Other sources of topographic map images on the web include the Libre Map Project, Google Maps, and Acme Labs.

Paper copies are available from the Kentucky Geological Survey.

COUNTY GENERAL HIGHWAY MAPS

These maps were produced by the Kentucky Department of Highways. The originals are 1:125,000 scale and about 18 inches by 18 to 24 inches (some are a little larger and a few are oriented 90° from the others). Two series are available: 1950 and 1999. The 1950 series maps were often actually from the 1930s and 40s with only minor updates. A few of the 1999 series maps are from earlier in the 1990s. (See the notes below for more information about how the maps were scanned and processed.)

The General Highway Maps are no longer updated and they will be replaced by the new County Road Series. The State Primary Road System maps are available for each county now, but they contain less detail. See the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's web site for more information.

NOTES

The 1950 files were scanned at the University of Kentucky Map Library at 300 dpi and black-and-white (1 bit). They range in size from about 3 to 5 megabytes.

The 1999 files were scanned by the Kentucky Department of Highways with additional processing at the University of Kentucky Computing Center. The maps were scanned at 300 dpi and 8-bit gray scale and reduced to 4-bit. They range in size from about 1 to 4 megabytes.

The 1999 GIF images were converted to 72 dpi, scaled 50%, and reduced to 4-bit gray scale. The resulting 72 dpi, 16-gray-level images are about 208% of their original size. This size is useful for direct display on most computer monitors, as a template for drawing programs, and can be printed at 150 dpi to yield a usable, although slightly fuzzy, map that is about 4% larger than the original. They range in size from about 256 kilobytes up to a little more than a megabyte.

DIGITAL ORTHOPHOTO QUADRANGLES (DOQ)

Scanned, corrected aerial photographs called digital orthophotos for Kentucky are available from the state's Division of Geographic Information or the old Kentucky Geospatial Data Download Site (no longer updated).

OTHER HISTORICAL MAPS OF KENTUCKY

A collection of historical Kentucky maps is available from the Kentuckiana Digital Library, including Sanborn maps for many Kentucky cities and towns.

An 1899 road map of central Kentucky for bicycle use is available.
