We are pleased to announce that Family Weekend will be held September 28 - 30, 2018! We encourage you yo book hotels at your earliest convenience. We'll have more information about the schedule available in spring/summer 2018. Tickets to the football game against South Carolina will go on sale over the summer, and we anticipate putting tickets to our Parent and Family Association-hosted events on sale in August. As we have Family Weekend news to communicate, we'll use Cat Chat emails as well as the Family Weekend website, our UK Parent and Family Association mobile app, and our social media pages (Facebook and Twitter). We hope to have your family join us for Family Weekend 2018!
Events will begin on a Friday evening and will end after lunch on a Sunday. The full 2018 Family Weekend schedule will be available in the fall of 2018 online and on the UK Guides Parent and Family Association mobile app.
Here is a look at the 2017 Family Weekend schedule:
Tickets to UK Parent and Family Association events will go on sale during K Week in August. Family Weekend football tickets will go on sale this summer. More information will be posted on the Family Weekend website, the UK Parents Facebook and Twitter pages, and on the UK Guides Parent and Family Association mobile app as it becomes available.
What time is the Family Weekend Tent Party and game kick-off?
The Family Weekend Tent Party starts 2 1/2 hours before the football game kick-off. The time of kick-off is determined approximately 7-10 days before the game. Information about the kick-off time will be made available as soon as the time is confirmed by UK Athletics.
What can I expect during Family Weekend at UK?
Family Weekend is a chance to experience the best of a busy fall weekend in Lexington! Anytime there is a home football game campus will be more crowded as more than 60,000 Wildcat fans flock to the Commonwealth Stadium area. Racing fans will be descending on Lexington to cheer on the horses at Keeneland. Many families are eager to be part of both of those fall traditions! If you’re planning on joining in the fun, expect larger crowds, traffic, and more limited parking. Investigate shuttle and walking options and plan accordingly. We’ll put together the information you need in the Family Weekend guide that you can pick up at check-in on Friday night. If you can’t attend check-in, we’ll be sharing that same information on our website and Facebook and Twitter pages.
If football and horse racing aren’t your thing, there are still plenty of activities you can take part in. We hope families will review the schedule we have put together and will pick the events that most appeal to them. We won’t be offended if families ditch our schedule and do something entirely different. We just want you to have fun as a family here in Lexington!
Please note the events on the schedule that require an advanced ticket purchase. We do our very best to accommodate as many families as possible, but we are limited by venue capacities and safety regulations. The UK Parent and Family Association hosts the pre-game tent party, Spindletop lunch, and DNT 101, and all three of those events sell out every year. Please purchase tickets as soon as possible after they go on sale to avoid disappointment.
Events will go on rain or shine, so please check the weather and plan accordingly. Fall weather in Kentucky can be unpredictable – be prepared!
Every year when we ask families to report the highlight of their UK Family Weekend experience, the top answer we receive is spending time with family. No matter what you all choose to do with your time together – enjoy it!
What if my family can’t come that weekend?
Every year we hear from disappointed families that UK’s Family Weekend is the same weekend as an important event back at home or that they’ve been invited to campus for a different weekend. We know that no one weekend is going to work for all UK families! If you can’t come to UK’s Family Weekend but want assistance making plans for a visit at another time, reach out to the Parent and Family Association. Our staff loves to talk about our favorite things in Lexington and around campus, so we’d be happy to offer you guidance as you make plans! Call us at 859-257-2752, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org, or post on our Facebook page to connect with other UK families and hear about their favorite things to do.
When do families typically arrive on campus? When do they depart?
Our schedule of events will start on Friday afternoon and continue through Sunday afternoon. However, if you can only come for a portion of the weekend, that’s fine, too. Do whatever works for your family. Friday evening is the only time we are able to offer an official welcome/check-in for the weekend. If you won’t be in town by then, feel free to send your student over to pick up our guide to the weekend. We’ll also post the information from the guide on our website and Facebook and Twitter pages.
Can we bring grandparents and other family members?
Yes, that’s why we call it Family Weekend! If we only wanted parents around, we’d call it Parents Weekend. We strive to offer activities that will entertain the youngest and oldest members of the family and everyone in between. If there are concerns about special needs in your party, reach out to the Parent and Family Association staff at 859-257-2752 or email@example.com. We’re happy to help you make plans.
Can a sibling stay in the residence halls?
These requests are handled by the Office of Residence Life. To learn more about the minor visitation policy, view the Minor Visitation Request Form.
What is the residence hall check-in policy?
All guests, including family members and students who live in university housing, must be logged on the visitation log at the front desk and be escorted by their host at all times while in the building. In addition, guests are required to leave their own government-issued picture identification at the front desk, which will be returned when the guest leaves the hall.
Please note that while the policy typically limits each resident to two guests at a time, during Family Weekend additional guests will be allowed as long as they are family members or guests of family members.
Why are hotel rooms so expensive?
Many families make their first visits to Lexington for UK campus tours or orientations that aren’t scheduled at the height of demand for hotel rooms. The popularity of UK football and Keeneland bring thousands of folks in every fall so hotel rooms are naturally going to be more expensive and in demand. You are strongly encouraged to make hotel reservations at your earliest convenience. If you find that the available accommodations aren’t in your budget, you might want to seek an alternate time to come to campus. Hotels will be less expensive when the football team is away or off and when Keeneland isn’t running (meets are held every October and April). Visit www.visitlex.com for information on area accommodations.
Will events sell out?
Yes! The UK Parent and Family Association hosts the pre-game tent party, Spindletop lunch, and A Taste of the Kentucky Doughnut Trail, and all three of those events sell out every year. Please purchase tickets as soon as possible after they go on sale to avoid disappointment. We do our very best to accommodate as many families as possible, but we are limited by venue capacities and safety regulations.
How do I get tickets?
While many Family Weekend events are free, some events will require tickets. Events like the UK football game, pre-game tent party, Spindletop lunch, and A Taste of the Kentucky Doughnut Trail all require a ticket purchase. The tent party, Spindletop lunch, and A Taste of the Kentucky Doughnut Trail have all sold out in recent years, so tickets should be purchased well in advance; tickets will not be available at the door for these events. Tickets will be available online at www.uky.edu/familyweekendtix starting Friday, August 18, 2017.
Family Weekend football tickets may be purchased through UK Athletics this summer by calling the UK Ticket Office at 800-928-2287 and referencing Family Weekend. For more information about UK football tickets or game information, visit UKathletics.com.
Where do I park?
Every year we work very closely with UK Transportation Services to help you navigate campus during your visit. Note that campus will be very busy during Family Weekend, so you are advised to walk or use shuttles as much as possible. Parking will be limited, especially in the stadium area on Saturday. Please scroll down for additional parking information.
Will events go on if it rains?
Events will go on rain or shine, so please check the weather and plan accordingly. Fall weather in Kentucky can be unpredictable – pack an umbrella, jacket, and sweatshirt so you’ll be prepared!
Does my family have to go to all Family Weekend events?
We hope families will review the schedule we have put together and will pick the events that most appeal to them. We won’t be offended if families ditch our schedule and do something entirely different. We just want you to have fun as a family here in Lexington!
My family would like to try tailgating on our own. How can we get a game day parking permit?
Single game parking permits are not offered at the stadium. The permits are limited to season ticket holders who purchase them in advance. Here is the Athletics' most current website for gameday information: http://www.ukathletics.com/page/gameday-football-parking-12-20-2016.
What is the bag policy for Kroger Field?
This season, to improve public safety and help speed entry, the SEC has adopted a league-wide clear bag policy for all football games and we are implementing the policy accordingly at Kroger Field starting this fall.
Each fan, including students, will be permitted to carry one large clear bag – either a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag or a 12” x 6” x 12” clear bag – plus a small clutch that does not exceed 4.5” x 6.5”. The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and is also easily searched.
The policy has been in place in the NFL for the last few seasons and eight SEC schools also implemented it prior to league-wide implementation. If you have any questions about the policy, please contact 859-218-3716 or BBNfirst@uky.edu.
BOOK YOUR HOTEL NOW! Given the demand for hotel rooms on a home SEC football weekend during Homecoming and Keeneland's fall meet, you are strongly encouraged to make reservations at your earliest convenience. Check out www.visitlex.com for accomodation information.
More than 40,000 people a day visit the University of Kentucky – even more on weekends with special events like football games or Family Weekend. While parking lots are spread throughout campus, please realize that you may have to park a short walk from your destination and allow extra time. Shuttle information will be available in the fall.
• Most employee lots and student commuter lots are accessible and available on weekends, with the exception of lots surrounding Kroger Field and on Sports Center Drive. Permits are not required after 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoons until 5 a.m. Monday mornings in many North and Central Campus E (employee) and C (commuter) lots.
• Signs are posted at the entrance of each lot to make you aware of parking regulations and any permit requirements. Click HERE for non-permited parking map.
• Do not park in R (residential) lots.
• Spaces for visitors with disabilities are located throughout campus in close proximity to entrances of university buildings. These spaces, however, typically require an ADA accessible permit issued by Transportation Services or a gate attendant. During Family Weekend only, Transportation Services will allow use of state-issued ADA accessible permits. If you need assistance with locating accessible parking, please contact Transportation Services at 859-257-5757 or toll-free at 800-441-0555. You can contact them via email at UKParking@lsv.uky.edu.
