Patricia Kunz Howard, RN, PhD, CEN, CPEN, NE-BC, FAEN, FAAN is Enterprise Director of Emergency Services for UK HealthCare. Dr. Howard speaks nationally on emergency care topics. She is co-section editor for the research to practice column of the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal, as well as the co-editor of the 6th edition of Sheehy’s Emergency Nursing Principles and Practices text. Her research interests include pain, family presence and injury prevention initiatives. Dr. Howard was the 34th president of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). She served on the ENA board from 2000-2006, and has served as a trustee and Chairperson of the Emergency Nurses Association Foundation. Dr. Howard has served on several national committees and she is currently serving a three year term on the national ENA Board of Directors. Dr. Howard was the 2011 recipient of the Judith Kelleher award from the Emergency Nurses Association for consistently demonstrating excellence in emergency nursing, making significant contributions to the profession of nursing, and to the specialty of emergency nursing. In 2010 she was recognized as one of the fifty most distinguished alumni by the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. Dr. Howard earned her ADN from Salem College and her BSN, MSN and PhD in Nursing from the University of Kentucky. She is a member of ANA, ENA, Sigma Theta Tau, NAEMSE, AHA and AONE.
