Joanne Matthews DNP, MSN, RN, APRN-CS

Joanne Matthews holds a dual position as course coordinator for the psychiatric/ mental health nursing course in the undergraduate program and psychiatric clinical liaison nurse for UK HealthCare. Prior to taking on this dual role, she managed the inpatient psychiatric unit at UK Chandler Hospital for 10 years and an acute care unit for two years. Matthews has worked or taught in a wide variety of specialties and settings including psychiatry, obstetrics, medical-surgical, and oncology. She has also served as a poison center frontline care provider. This latter position included professional conference planning and community education on poison prevention and treatment. She has held certifications in chemotherapy administration and poison (toxicology) information. She is a nationally certified trainer in non-violent crisis prevention intervention and provides this training to UK hospital staff. Since 1999 she has held her national certification as a clinical nurse specialist in adult psychiatric and mental health nursing. Matthews' current responsibilities focus on workplace communication and conflict resolution and patient care issues. She assists the nursing staff in providing safe, effective and optimal care to patients experiencing challenging psychiatric symptoms during medical admissions. In April 2008 Matthews received the UK Hospital Core Value of the Year Award for Innovation for her work in helping the nursing staff provide patient safety resource alternatives for high risk patients. Matthews is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and is a founding and continuing member of the Kentucky chapter. At the national association’s annual conference in 2010, the psychiatric clinical faculty won first place for their poster titled: “A Community Mental Health Clinical Project to Promote Mental Health, Engage Undergraduate Students and Serve the Community.”
