Kathy Wheeler earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1978 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 1981, both from the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. In 2006, while teaching at the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Hyden, Kentucky, she earned her PhD in Education from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, specializing in distance education of advanced practice nurses. She is now an assistant professor at the UK College of Nursing, teaching in the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program.
Dr. Wheeler is a family nurse practitioner at the UK Healthcare Georgetown, a family practice clinic of the UK Department of Family and Community Medicine. She also volunteers at a free clinic, the Frankfort Mission Clinic.
Before teaching, Dr. Wheeler served as executive director of the Kentucky Coalition of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives (KCNPNM). Prior to and during that time she was instrumental in passing legislation giving nurse practitioners in Kentucky the authority to prescribe and dispense medications. She continues to be active with KCNPNM, as Chair of the Education Interest Forum, member of the Legislative Committee and member of the Editorial Committee. Currently, she is the Treasurer of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and is Chair of the AANP International Committee. Additionally she is a Commissioner and Secretary of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program.
Awards include the following: AANP State Award for Excellence Kentucky NP Advocate in 2016, Sigma Theta Tau Delta Psi Chapter Leadership Award in 2009, Clinical Excellence Award from the UK College of Nursing Alumni Association in 1999, and AANP State Award for Excellence Kentucky NP of the Year in 1996. In 2016 she was named as a Distinguished Public Policy Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and in 2010 she was named as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
