College of Nursing Scholarships

The generosity of donors has allowed us to establish annual and endowed nursing scholarships to benefit current and future students. The University of Kentucky (UK) College of Nursing is honored to award the following scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year:

 

UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS

Lynn Garman Au Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship
Donor:  Mr. Gregory H. Au
Established in 2009 by Mr. Au in memory of his first wife, Lynn, to honor the quality nursing care she received. This renewable scholarship supports a student with a passion for service to others by providing full in-state tuition. The recipient is expected to initiate, grow or lead a health care education, health screening or a community-based outreach program or event. A faculty mentor provides supervision and support to the student and their chosen project.

Phyllis Antrim Briscoe Memorial Scholarship Fund
Donor:  Dr. John P. Briscoe
Established in 1992 by Dr. Briscoe in memory of his mother, Phyllis Antrim Briscoe, to honor her nursing career and interest in nursing education. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student who demonstrates the potential for success and describes a desire for the nursing profession by submitting an essay. First preference is given to Kentucky residents.

Dr. Patricia A. Calico Endowed Nursing Scholarship
Donors:  Dr. Patricia A. and Dr. Forrest W. Calico
Established in 2010 by the Calico’s in honor of Pat’s distinguished nursing career. This renewable scholarship is awarded to BSN students from Lincoln or Kenton County, Kentucky, or one of the five counties contiguous to Lincoln: Garrard, Boyle, Rockcastle, Pulaski or Casey; or Clay, Whitley or Knox Counties.

College of Nursing Alumni Association Student Support Scholarship
Donor:  UK College of Nursing Alumni Association
Established in 2011 to support BSN students as they pursue their degree in nursing. This scholarship is awarded to a senior involved in College activities beyond the classroom.

College of Nursing Undergraduate Scholarship
Donor:  UK College of Nursing 
Established with annual gifts from alumni and friends of the college to support students in the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, the RN-BSN, MedVet-BSN or Second Degree BSN options.

Taylor Ann Davis Scholarship
Donors:  Mrs. Tammy Davis, Ms. Joy E. Sado, family and friends
Established in 2016 by Taylor’s mother, aunt, family and special friends in honor and memory of Taylor’s free spirit, love of life and people.  This renewable scholarship is awarded to a currently enrolled Junior or Senior in the BSN program who possesses infectious positivity in the face of all adversities, limitless empathy, and an unfailing passion to help and heal others, just as Taylor did throughout her life.  

Dodson/Moore Community Health Nursing Scholarship
Donor:  Mrs. Sarah Dodson Moore
Established in 2014 by Mrs. Moore, who received her BSN and MSN from the UK College of Nursing. She found her true passion for nursing at Nathaniel United Methodist Mission Clinic, where she guided the clinic from 5 volunteers to more than 30 volunteers over 19 years. This scholarship is for an undergraduate nurse interested in pursuing a career in community health nursing.

Marcia Boyd Donaldson Scholarship
Donor:  Dr. Elvis S. Donaldson.
Established in 1989 by Dr. Donaldson in memory of his wife, Marcia Lynn Donaldson, a 1968 alumna of the UK College of Nursing. This renewable scholarship will be awarded to a BSN student who is a Kentucky resident.

Shayn Elexendere University of Kentucky College of Nursing Warrior Scholarship
Donor:  Colonel (RET.) William M. Heath
Established in 2016 in honor of Dr. Janie Heath, Dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing at the UK College of Nursing and renamed in memory of Mr. Shayn Elexendere, a MedVet BSN student.  This renewable scholarship is awarded to a Traditional BSN student in good standing who is an Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) member, veteran of the U.S. Military or is a child of a member of the U.S. Military. 

Everly-Highgenboten Scholarship
Donors:  Mrs. Sheila E. Highgenboten, MS, RN, FACHER and Dr. Carl L. Highgenboten
Established in 2010 as part of the 50th Anniversary Scholarship Campaign, this renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student in good academic standing.

Major Troy Gibson and Lieutenant Colonel Sally Siebert Scholarship in Honor and Memory of Military Nurses
Donor:  Lieutenant Colonel (RET.) Sally G. Siebert
Established in 1994 by Lieutenant Colonel (RET.) Siebert, a 1985 alumna, in memory of Troy Gibson, shortly after his passing. Mr. Gibson was a 1981 graduate of the UK College of Nursing. This scholarship is awarded to a sophomore BSN student in good standing to purchase equipment, supplies and other necessary nursing tools.

Good Samaritan Volunteers Scholarship
Donor:Good Samaritan Volunteers Association of Lexington, Kentucky
Established in 1997, this renewable scholarship is awarded to academically talented, second or third-year BSN students who are U.S. citizens and Kentucky residents.

Vicki Beekman Gorman Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship
Donors: Mr. F. Chris Gorman and Mrs. Vicki Beekman Gorman 
Established in 2009 as part of the 50th Anniversary Scholarship Campaign to honor Mrs. Gorman’s nursing career. The renewable scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the Traditional BSN program who qualified for provisional (formerly known as guaranteed) admission. Preference given to Kentucky residents.

Gorman Merit Scholarship
Donor:  Mrs. Sheila G. Steinberg   
Established in 1990 by Mrs. Steinberg, a 1979 BSN graduate, this renewable scholarship is awarded to BSN students who demonstrate the potential for academic excellence. Preference is given to Notre Dame Academy High School graduates in Covington, Kentucky, or residents of Boone, Campbell or Kenton Counties in Kentucky.

Linda Bowers Gorton Military/Veteran Nursing Scholarship
Donor:  Mrs. Linda Bowers Gorton 
Established in 2017 by Mrs. Gorton in honor of her husband, Major General (RET.) Charles E. Gorton, who served his country in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve for 39.5 years and supported his wife’s nursing career for over 43 years.  This renewable scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the BSN program who is a member in good standing of the University’s ROTC programs, veteran of the U.S. Military or a member of the Active Guard or Reserve.  

Colonel Faye T. Hagan Scholarship
Donor: The Estate of Colonel Faye T. Hagan 
Established in 2016, Colonel Hagan was a 1963 BSN graduate and member of the U.S. Air Force.  This renewable scholarship is awarded to current military, ROTC or veteran students in the Professional Nursing Program. 

Lindsey Marie Harp Scholarship
Donor:  Mr. Rick and Mrs. Cheryl Harp
Established in 2006 by the Harps in memory of their daughter, Lindsey. Lindsey was an outstanding student with a passion for nursing. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student with preference given to juniors or seniors from Franklin County, Kentucky, Georgetown College or Kentucky residents.

Doris Hatchell Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund
Donor:  The Estate of Mr. Ernest Hatchell
Established in 1993 by Mr. Hatchell’s estate in memory of his daughter, Doris Hatchell.  Ms. Hatchell worked all of her professional life as a nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital. She chose to give her estate to the UK College of Nursing for nursing student scholarships. This one time award is given to deserving BSN students.

James F. Hile Nursing Scholarship Fund
Donor: The Estate of James F. Hile
Established in 1999, Mr. Hile worked in a family drug store in Ohio, served as a medical representative and owned the sporting goods/variety store “Jim’s” in Nicholasville, Kentucky. This scholarship is given to a BSN student training to be a registered nurse.

Casiana R. Hilton Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship Fund
Donor:  Mrs. Casiana R. Hilton
Established in 2016 by Mrs. Hilton, this scholarship may be renewed for up to three years for a student who has been accepted or is enrolled in the Traditional BSN or Second Degree BSN program.  They must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate promise in the field of nursing and be involved in community or outreach programs.  Preference is given to students from economically disadvantaged regions of Kentucky. 

Barbara Hobbie Memorial Fund
Donor:  Mr. Roy L. Hobbie
Established in 2007 by Mr. Hobbie in memory of his mother, Barbara Hobbie. This fund provides support to BSN students who have maintained an outstanding academic record and submit a letter of reference that emphasizes a history of caring and a compassionate nature. First preference is given to students from rural Kentucky or West Virginia.

Sherry S. Holmes Pediatric Nursing Scholarship Endowment
Donor:  Mr. John B. Holmes
Established in 2013 and endowed in 2017 by Mr. Holmes, in honor of his wife Sherry Sallee Holmes’ commitment to the nursing profession. Mrs. Holmes is 1972 BSN and 1982 MSN alumna from UK who practiced as a pediatric nurse for 38 years and served as the Director of Children’s Services for Kentucky Children’s Hospital for 24 years. This scholarship is given to a senior in the BSN program who is a Kentucky resident and actively pursuing a pediatric nursing career.

Ann Hurt/Bryan Station High School Scholarship
Donors:  Dr. Debra G. Anderson and Mr. William E. Cooper
Established in 2013 in honor of Ms. Ann Hurt, Bryan Station High School (BSHS) longtime guidance counselor. This renewable scholarship is for traditional BSN students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. First preference is given to a graduate of BSHS in Lexington, Kentucky.

Robert B. and Helen P. Jewell Foundation Scholarship
Donor:  The Jewell Foundation
Established in 2014, the Jewell Family Foundation is committed to helping students succeed and provides similar scholarships in several UK colleges. This renewable four-year award is given to a Kentucky resident with high academic ability.

Mark and Lateshia Johnson Nursing Scholarship Fund
Donors:  Mr. Mark U. and Mrs. Lateshia S. Johnson
Established in 2015 by the Johnsons for a student enrolled in the traditional BSN program in good academic standing.  This renewable award gives first preference to a student from Taylor County High School or Campbellsville High School in Kentucky, with second preference to a student from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. 

Sister Roberta Kienstra Scholaship Fund
Donors:  Mr. Michael J. and Mrs. Julie M. Wilmering
Established in 2014 for a student enrolled in the traditional BSN program with a minimum 3.0 GPA from one of the following Eastern Kentucky counties:  Bell, Breathitt, Carter, Clay, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, McCreary, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Rockcastle, Whitley and Wolfe.  The scholarship may be renewable for up to four (4) academic years. 

Anna Gibson Kopser Scholarship
Donor:  Mr. George Kopser, Mrs. Kathleen Kopser, Mr. Raymond Kopser, Mrs. Jacqueline Kopser and family
Established in 2012 by the family of Mrs. Anna Gibson Kopser to honor her lifelong wish to be a nurse.  Mrs. Kopser left the fifth grade to stay home and care for her ailing mother and later volunteered for many years at Saint Joseph Hospital. This renewable scholarship is for a Second Degree BSN or RN-BSN student who maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Krolikoski Family Scholarship
Donors:  Major (RET.) Richard M. and Mrs. Paula K. Krolikoski
Established in 2016 in memory of Major Krolikoski’s mother, Mary Krolikoski and brother, Robert Krolikoski.  Major Krolikoski is a 1976 alum of the UK College of Nursing.  This renewable scholarship is for a student accepted to the Professional Nursing Program who has expressed interest in working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).  Preference is given to those underrepresented in the profession and military veterans. 

Barbara Hillborn Kunz Scholarship Fund
Donor:  Dr. Patricia K. Howard
Established in 2012 by Dr. Howard to honor her mother, Barbara Hillborn Kunz, who always supported her educational endeavors. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a traditional BSN, Second Degree BSN or RN-BSN in good academic standing.

LCC Metropolitan Woman’s Club Scholarship
Donor:  LCC Metropolitan Woman’s Club
Established in 1989 for non-traditional (25 years or older) nursing students. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a Kentucky resident until the degree is completed, as long as the recipient shows progress and maintains a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.

Logan Metzler Family Nursing Scholarship
Donors:  Dr. Ann Drayton Logan-Metzler and Dr. James Metzler
Established in 2016 and endowed in 2017 to honor the nurses in the Logan and Metzler families.  This renewable scholarship is awarded to undergraduate nursing students who have a proven commitment to community service as shown by previous volunteer service.   

Peggy S. McClintock Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund
Donors:  The McClintock Family
Established in 1988 to honor the professional expertise and enthusiasm of Peggy McClintock and her desire to support young people in their career endeavors. Ms. McClintock served as the UK Medical Center personnel director until her death at age 47. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a third-year nursing student who is a Kentucky resident. Special consideration may be given to non-traditional students who are over 25 years of age.

Diane Evans Payne Nursing Scholarship
Donor:  Mrs. Diane Evans Payne
Established in 2014 by Mrs. Payne to help another student receive a “great education,” just as she received as a UK nursing student. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student, Kentucky resident in good academic standing with a minimum 3.25 GPA.

Emma H. Peddicord Family Scholarship
Donors:  Mr. Ronald Peddicord, Mr. Stephen Peddicord, Dr. Carol Peddicord and
Ms. Martha Peddicord
Established in 2012 by the Peddicord family in loving memory of Emma H. Peddicord. Mrs. Peddicord was a nurse who passionately devoted her life to her family and her patients. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a full-time BSN student in good academic standing, who is a graduate of a Kentucky high school and a current Kentucky resident with a minimum 3.0 GPA. An essay describing the student’s desire to pursue a career in nursing is required.

Pamela Riggs Peters Endowment Fund
Donor:  Mr. George Peters, III
Established in 1996 by Mr. Peters, III in memory of his wife, Pamela Riggs Peters. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student who is a Kentucky resident.

Gayle Plank Scholarship
Donor:  Mrs. Setsuko Adams
Established in 2012 to honor Ms. Angela Gayle Plank, a UK HealthCare Chandler Hospital patient care manager, to recognize her outstanding nursing leadership skills and distinguished nursing career. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student in good academic standing and provides them an opportunity to further explore a career in medical surgery recovery by shadowing Ms. Plank for a day.

Prevost Nursing Scholarship
Donors:  Dr. Suzanne and Mr. William Frank Prevost
Established in 2010 by Dr. Prevost, a former dean of practice and engagement at the UK College of Nursing who is currently the Dean of the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a traditional BSN first generation student.

Howard J., Clarine O. and Dr. Karen R. Robinson Nursing Scholarship
Donor:  Dr. Karen R. Robinson
Established in 2011 by Dr. Robinson and the Robinson family to express their appreciation to UK for assisting Karen in earning her BSN in 1977. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a traditional BSN or Second Degree BSN student in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA. 

Sample Family Scholarship
Donor:  Mrs. Ann Sample
Established in 1994 by Mrs. Sample in memory of her husband Harry, son, Marc and daughter Kim.  The renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student in good standing to purchase books and supplies required for clinical course work and laboratory studies.

E. Vernon and Eloise C. Smith Nursing Scholarship
Donor:  Dr. E. Vernon Smith
Established in 2006 by Dr. Smith, a native of Greenup County, Kentucky and a UK graduate, in loving memory of his wife, Eloise, his hometown, and his esteemed medical career. This renewable scholarship is awarded to nursing students from Greenup County, Kentucky with high academic standards.

Jane Badham Tudor Scholarship
Donor:  Mr. C. R. Tudor
Established in 1986 by Mr. Tudor in memory of his wife and the wonderful care she received at UK Chandler Hospital. Mrs. Tudor was a UK dorm housemother who was dearly loved by all her “girls.” This renewable scholarship is awarded to a BSN student who demonstrates potential for academic excellence.

Karen K. Tufts Nursing Scholarship
Donors:  Ms. Jennifer L. Tufts, Mrs. Natalie T. Young and friends and family of Karen K. Tufts. 
Established in 2016 by Ms. Tufts and Mrs. Young in memory of their mother, Mrs. Karen K. Tufts.  Many friends and family also contributed to the creation of this endowed scholarship in honor of Mrs. Tuft’s life and nursing career in mental health.  This renewable scholarship is awarded to an RN-BSN, Second Degree BSN or MedVet-BSN student who maintains good academic standing. 

Mary P. Winternitz Scholarship
Donors:  Dr. William W. Winternitz, Dr. William W. Winternitz, Jr., Mrs. Helen W. Winternitz and   Mr. Paul K. Winternitz
Established in 1965 by the Winternitz family to pay tribute to the outstanding qualities of their wife and mother, a nurse and Good Samaritan. This renewable scholarship is awarded to an entering sophomore who through past performance demonstrates the potential for nursing success, cheerfulness and responsiveness (i.e. warm personal relationships, dependability and dedication) to the needs of others.

University of Kentucky Medical Center Undergraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship
Donor:  University of Kentucky
This renewable scholarship is awarded to BSN students with a minimum cumulative 3.5 GPA.

University of Kentucky Medical Center Undergraduate Enhancement Scholarship for Nursing Students
Donor:  University of Kentucky
This renewable scholarship is awarded to BSN students who contribute to the diversity of the College and University through academic standing/class rank, leadership and community involvement or as a first generation college student, underrepresented in the profession and more. 

University of Kentucky Medical Center Undergraduate Wright Scholarship for Nursing Students
Donor:  University of Kentucky
This renewable scholarship is awarded to BSN students who qualify as a University Merit Scholar.
