The University of Kentucky, Colleges of Engineering, Education, Arts & Sciences, and the Partnership Institute for Mathematics, and Science Education Reform (PIMSER) presents our First Annual STEM Symposium for all educators, including undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, educational leaders, teacher educators, educational researchers and others with an interest in the field of education.

"Education Infusion into Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics"

The Colleges of Engineering, Education, Arts & Sciences, and PIMSER will be hosting the first Annual STEM Education Conference at the University of Kentucky. This conference will focus on STEM research, teaching, and learning with goals of generating new partnerships and collaboration across the STEM disciplines. Faculty, K-12 educators, and STEM undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to present STEM Education related research or experiences.

Keynote Speaker

M. David Burghardt, PhD

Dr. M. David Burghardt is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Chair of Engineering at Hofstra University, and the author of ten texts in thermodynamics, diesel engines and engineering fundamentals. Dr. Burghardt is a community activist, believing that engineers should seek leadership roles in our technologically sophisticated society. He created the Hofstra Center for Technological Literacy to enhance technological literacy of K-12 New York students. In collaboration with colleagues in the Hofstra University's School of Education, Dr. Burghardt helped create a graduate program in integrated mathematics, science and technology (MST) for teachers placing engineering and the design experience at the center of learning.

The theme of the STEM Symposium is "Education Infusion into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics."

The STEM Committee is very pleased to feature as keynote speaker for this event, Dr. M. David Burghardt, renowned researcher and leader in Engineering and STEM education.
Members of the local K-12 and university community are urged to share their STEM education-related research by attending and presenting papers or posters at the conference symposium.

Proposal submitters may choose between three formats for their presentations: paper presentation, “round table discussion,” and poster presentation. Presenters will be notified by January 13th, 2010 about the acceptance of their papers or posters for presentation.
