(1) Waterbotics Camp Now Open to Rising Ninth Grade Girls and Boys

The waterbotics camp hosted by the Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative is now open to rising ninth grade girls and boys. The camp, called "RoboKats," runs 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 25-29. Students will discover how robotics are changing the world as they work together to design, construct, program and operate an underwater vessel. The registration deadline has been extended to July 15 for students still wishing to sign up for the camp. See UKnow for the full story.

(3) UK Creates Department of STEM Education

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 22, 2011) — The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees today approved the creation of the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the UK College of Education, effective July 1, 2011.

This new department will expand and enhance STEM education efforts at UK and for the Commonwealth in significant ways. It will implement the use of focused disciplinary and transdisciplinary practices to prepare 21st century STEM education leaders and improve STEM education through the implementation of research-based practices, including engagement with the P20 Innovation Lab communities and businesses, unique research experiences, and innovative programs.

The STEM Education Department will build new bachelor's and doctoral programs in the teaching of science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics, along with strengthening teacher preparation programs already in place with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Furthermore, the department plans to lead the Commonwealth in STEM education research by attracting graduate students as well as future STEM faculty researchers pursuing cutting edge research in these disciplines.

(4) PIMSER hosts conference on Common Core Standards and Assessment

The P-12 Math & Science Outreach will host a two-day conference this summer focused on the new Common Core Standards and implementation of Senate Bill 1. Join fellow educators to discover a variety of strategies, presented by national and local experts, that address the challenges of relating standards, instruction and assessment. Pre-conference sessions will focus on methods of instruction utilizing research, technology and assessment for learning. (5) Mini-grants Available to Increase Girls' Interest in Science, Engineering and Technology

LEXINGTON, Ky. (January 7, 2011) - The Kentucky Girls STEM Collaborative, a statewide initiative to encourage girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), is currently offering mini-grants of up to $1,000. Teachers, community groups and other organizations committed to collaborating, informing and motivating girls are encouraged to apply. Download flyer.

Our grants are funded in collaboration with the Kentucky National Science Foundation (NSF) Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration Kentucky Space Grant Consortium (NASA KY).  Although applications in any STEM area will be considered, priority will be given to mini-grants that align with the research areas supported by KY EPSCoR and NASA KY. (6) A STEM Education Course for Spring 2011 —
EDC 704: Designing Project-Based Environments in STEM

This graduate course will emphasize the contents, technologies, instructional strategies, and assessments necessary in designing and developing a research-based, interdisciplinary, project-enhanced environment. (7) New Graduate Course: EDC 708 Engineering in STEM Education, offered SPRING 2011

This is a course for:

  • Education students who want to learn how to integrate engineering design into their teaching and research
  • Engineering students who wish to develop and use engineering design-based curricula for outreach and research

(8) UK Awarded $780,000 in State Grants to Support Science Teachers in Central and Eastern KY

The P-12 Math and Science Outreach Unit of PIMSER in partnership with OSPA, UK College of Ed, and UK  was awarded 2 of the 5  state Math and Science Partnership projects to design and facilitate a Science Leadership Support Network in the Central and Eastern region of the state.  UK will receive $195,000/project per year x 2 years so approx. $800,000 total.

The higher education partners for the 2 funded projects are: Central KY (Christine Schnittka, Becky McNall, and Robin Cooper). We are excited about these partnerships and know it will strengthen our outreach efforts.


(9) Toyota USA Foundation award’s UK’s Partnership Institute for Mathematics and Science Education Reform (PIMSER) $500,000

The funds will be used to  help K-12 teachers develop more effective methods of teaching math and science in 13 central and northern Kentucky urban school districts. View the UKnow story.

(10) VOICES of AMSP Reflective Conference
Lexington, KY    December 3rd & 4th

The Appalachian Math and Science Partnership will hold a reflective conference on Friday and Saturday, December 3-4, 2010.  The innovative reforms in STEM education that AMSP has sparked in the region will be highlighted in the stories of AMSP teachers, higher education faculty, district administrators and others.  Future directions for STEM education reform in the region will also be presented.
