Welcome to the Citizen Police Academy
The University of Kentucky Police Department has created an opportunity for citizens to gain insight into the daily functions and responsibilities of our law enforcement personnel. The Citizen Police Academy mission is to utilize this educational opportunity to foster a more cohesive relationship between law enforcement officers and the campus community. Graduates will be able to share knowledge gained with others in the community, thereby helping others become more familiar with police practices.
Course Description
The Academy is comprised of a series of three hour courses offered over a seven week period. An Academy class will be offered at least once during each school semester. Upon attendance at all seven courses, participants will take part in a formal graduation ceremony. Instructors have been selected based on their respective fields of expertise. The following is a list of topics presented during the Citizen Police Academy:
- University Policing Overview
- Criminal Procedure
- K-9 Operations
- Firearms / Use of Force
- Special Response Team (SRT)
- Executive Protection Team (EPT)
- Police Survival Skills / Self Defense
Course material will be presented through lecture, audio-visual aids, and interactive scenarios. There is no charge for taking part in the Citizen Police Academy.
Participant Eligibility
- 18 years or older with no prior felony convictions
- Affiliation with the University of Kentucky
- Lexington area resident
Prospective participants will be expected to complete a course application and submit to an electronic background check.
