Police Hiring Process

Phase I

Phase I In Depth

To be considered a viable applicant for the University of Kentucky Police Officer hiring process, submit an application for an open position on the UK jobs website.  Search “Police Officer.”  If no position is available, we are not currently hiring.  Once a position is posted, it is available for approximately one month.  The Written Test dates and tentative Physical Fitness Test date is announced in the “Job Summary.”

 

Written Test, The University of Kentucky campus

 

The Written Test is administered by the Special Operations unit at the Jacobs Science Building on campus.  The test consists of four sections:

  1. Match
  2. Reading Comprehension
  3. Grammar
  4. Writing Skills

When applying for a Police Officer position, the Written Test dates will be announced in the Job Summary.  The test lasts for roughly three hours. 

Study materials are available for preparation for the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST).

To pass the Written Test candidates must achieve an 80% or higher.  Written Test scores are valid for two years from the date of hire.

 

Physical Fitness Test, DOCJT, Richmond, KY

The Physical Fitness Test is administered by the Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond, KY.  The Physical Fitness Test is a test battery consisting of five items:

  1. Bench Press (% of body weight – conversion)

  2. Sit up Test (1 minute time limit)

  3. 300 meter run

  4. Push up Test (2 minute time limit)

  5. 1.5 Mile Run

 

To pass the Physical Fitness Test candidates must achieve 50 minute points based on the table below:

When applying for a Police Officer position, the tentative Physical Fitness Test date will be announced in the Job Summary.  The test lasts for roughly three hours on the scheduled Monday morning.

Candidates must complete and bring Form T1 – “Medical Release” and their driver’s license to the test.  Please note on the Form T1, if any one item between numbers 1-10 is checked “YES,” the Physician’s Medical Release Form (T-1a) must be completed and also brought to the test.

Physical Fitness Test scores are valid for one year from the date of hire.

 

Background Oral Board, University of Kentucky campus

A background oral board is conducted by multiple officers from UKPD’s Special Operations Team.  The background oral boards last one hour. 

 

Background Investigation Interview, University of Kentucky campus

A background investigation interview is conducted by one of the officers from UKPD’s Special Operations Team.  Background investigation interviews typically last one hour.  Candidates will be asked to supply the following information when appearing for the interview:

  1. Copy of driver’s license.

  2. Copy of social security card.

  3. Copy of High School Diploma or certified copy of transcript, GED Equivalency, and College Transcript if applicable.

  4. Military discharge papers if applicable (DD 214).

  5. Credit Report.

  6. Certified copy of Birth Certificate, Naturalization Papers or Passport.

  7. Typed references, 2-3 paragraphs – one family or spouse reference and three personal references other than family members.

Please be sure that all copies are completed prior to the background interview. Note that all copies will be collected and placed in the candidate's hiring file and will therefore stay within the department.

Polygraph Examination, University of Kentucky campus

Before completing the Polygraph, candidates will be required to complete two hard copy questionnaires that must be provided to the in-house polygraph examiner.  Average duration of a Polygraph Exam is two hours.  Polygraph Exams are considered valid for one year from the date of hire.

 

Suitability Screener and Drug Test, DOCJT, Richmond, KY

Before completing the Suitability Screener in person, candidates will be required to complete an online questionnaire.  Average duration of the screener is three hours, but it can take up to five hours to complete.    Either before or after the exam, candidates complete a drug test.  Both the Suitability Screener and drug test are administered at the Department of Criminal Justice in Richmond, KY.  Suitability Screeners are considered valid for one year from the date of hire.

 

Formal Oral Board Interview, University of Kentucky campus

The Formal Oral Board Interview consists of a panel of various members from the University of Kentucky Police Department and University community.  The average duration of the oral board is one hour. 

Phase III

  • Chief’s Interview, University of Kentucky campus

  • Physical Examination, Concentra UTC in Lexington, KY

Chief Monroe’s Interview, University of Kentucky campus

Chief Monroe conducts one-on-one interviews with candidates at headquarters on The University of Kentucky campus.  Average duration of this interview is 20 minutes.

 

Physical Examination, Concentra UTC in Lexington, KY

Candidates who are extended a contingent offer are required to complete a pre-employment Physical Exam at a Lexington Concentra location.

 

Offer and Academy

Candidates who are extended a full offer start as soon as possible regardless of the Academy start date.

Newly hired Police officers attend a 20-week, live-in academy at the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond, Kentucky unless already certified by the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council as a Kentucky Peace officer.
