Improved Bike Routes Around Campus
As the start of fall semester nears, all of campus is readying for another year and an influx of new students. That preparation extends to the campus and neighboring roadways, which have seen a number of improvements in recent weeks.
University Drive is a key piece in the overall bicycle infrastructure of the community, and a route traveled by many UK bike commuters. Last week, bike lanes were added to the final 700 foot section connecting University Drive to Alumni Drive. With this addition, University Drive – a critically important component of the campus bicycle infrastructure - now features bike lanes from Alumni Drive to Hilltop Avenue.
A combination of sharrows (shared lane markings indicating shared usage for bikes and motorized vehicles) and bike lanes now connect Bolivar to South Upper and South Broadway, enhancing the connection between UK and student housing options to the west of campus.
Finally, as part of a Kentucky Department of Transportation resurfacing of US 27, a new bike lane was added to a short section of South Upper Street in front of the Taylor Education Building.

Johnson Center is 7th UK DIY Fix-It Station
Another do-it-yourself bicycle fix-it station was recently added to UK’s campus, located outside the Johnson Center. Campus cyclists now have access to a total of seven repair stations, all of which offer basic bike tools, an air pump and 24-hour availability. The other stations are located at Blazer Hall, the College of Nursing, The Commons at the Kirwan-Blanding Complex, the Oswald Building, Patterson Drive and W.T. Young Library.
Each station also includes a sign with links to additional resources and a step-by-step guide to repairing flat tires. The stations were funded by the UK Bicycle Advisory Committee, with the exception of the Blazer Hall location, which was funded by the Student Sustainability Council.
