Practice and Community Engagement

Chair: Beth Hunter

The Practice and Community Engagement Committee works in consultation with the appropriate Associate or Assistant Deans, Directors, and other relevant college personnel and committees in matters related to service and practice. Membership on the committee includes representatives from public health practice sites including state and local public health departments.  Committee functions include reviewing practicum placements for MPH and DrPH students, preceptor evaluations of UKCPH students as well as student evaluations of the expansion of MPH and DrPH competencies through the practicum opportunity.  The committee also evaluates service and workforce development opportunities through which CPH faculty interact with the community.  Practice-based community members provide insight into the effectiveness of UKCPH involvement in the community, provide additional opportunity information for student placements and faculty involvement and share details on current and upcoming practice-based events.

Research

The Research Committee fosters and promotes involvement in research and aims to increase knowledge about the research process among faculty, staff, and students. Membership of the committee includes faculty representatives from each department in the College of Public Health, the Associate and Assistant Deans for Research,  and student representatives from the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral-level programs. Committee functions include assisting and advising the Associate Dean for Research on fostering a diverse culture of intellectual discovery in the College, including selecting speakers for the lecture series; soliciting, reviewing, and disseminate information regarding funding opportunities; and engaging with the larger University to expand CPH research collaborations and productivity. The committee also recommends and reviews activities to enhance the visibility of the College’s research efforts and programs across the nation.

Staff Council

Staff Council is charged with representing the College staff on all matters pertaining to work/life and serving as formal liaison between staff and administration.

Undergraduate

The Bachelor of Public Health program formally began in fall 2014. Infrastructure in the CPH to provide faculty leadership for the program has been limited. A Director of Undergraduate Studies position is currently unfilled, with the Associate Dean serving in an interim capacity. A need exists to provide appropriate faculty and student input for improving and supporting the undergraduate program.

Membership of the committee includes faculty representatives from each department and student representatives from the master's-level and doctoral-level programs. Committee functions include assisting and advising the Associate Dean for Research as requested to identify current and emerging sources of research funding for public health and health systems initiatives, and solicit, review, and disseminate information regarding available funding opportunities to all faculty, staff, and students. The committee reviews and recommend policies regarding research funding. The committee also recommend and review activities in an effort to enhance the visibility of the College’s research efforts and programs.
