Testing for Languages Not Taught at UK

Student at ComputerIncoming first-year students must take a foreign language placement exam if they have high school credit for a language and wish to continue studying the same language. Students do not need the exam if they want to start in the first level of a different language than they took in high school or if they do not plan to study a language in the fall.

All College of Arts and Sciences majors who took either French, German, or Spanish in high school, are required to take the placement exam in their respective language. This is a computer based, multiple choice exam which takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. The exam covers reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. There are no listening or speaking portions of the exam. Those incoming students who are currently enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, and have not yet taken the exams (e.g., when registering at UK during a Merit Weekend in March), will be allowed to enroll in courses based on the assumption that they will pass their language AP or IB exams(s). Qualifying results will be verified after students complete the exams.

Students who want to satisfy the language requirement in a language not taught at the University of Kentucky may take a proficiency test for this purpose. There are proficiency tests available for several languages. A list of those languages can be found below. Tests are offered twice a year, on the second Friday in October and on the first Friday in March, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Before arranging for a test, students must consult with their College or Departmental advisor about the policy for proficiency testing as a means to satisfy the language requirement in their majors. Students must register and pay all fees for the tests at least three weeks before the date they intend to take the test. The student is responsible for paying all costs associated with the test.

To arrange for a test, contact Liliana Drucker (lilo@uky.edu, 257-5723), Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures, 1055 Patterson Office Tower. There is also an on-line form, available also on the MCL website (http://mcl.as.uky.edu/language-test-sign-form). Please note: You should contact your academic advisor BEFORE scheduling a test, and/ or if you have questions about satisfying the foreign language requirement. You may find your academic advisor through myUK.

If you have spoken to your advisor, and if you are ready to schedule a test, you may do so here.
