Spatial Flexibility: 16#

return to virtual tour

The spatial sequence of the house allows for a dramatic diagonal or spatial release within what would appear to be an otherwise narrow, 12-foot wide living area. The tour route begins with the expression of daily rituals such as sleeping, bathing, cleaning, dining and living. Each of these rooms provide framed views to the National Mall and express the desired connections between our design ethos of challenging people to "live.light".

The kitchen provides an adaptable living and dining room environment. The public function of entertainment and dining form an adaptable core for the house. The design is based upon an open and porous loft concept anchored by the home’s hearth — the kitchen core and a series of seamlessly integrated outdoor rooms that envelope the house to form an engaged landscape.

To maximize space in the general portion of the house, the s.ky blue team has designed and fabricated numerous areas and spaces unforeseen to the eye. Built-ins and bump-outs act as wardrobe and storage compartments. For example, a pocket-table slides into the kitchen wall making it possible for a multifunctional dining and entertainment area. The Shaker inspired chairs that hang flat on the wall, concealed door slides and foldout office table compliment the spatial goals desired throughout the house.
