ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES
COLLEGIATE RIFLE COACHES ASSOCIATION

The Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association met March 8, 2001 in Columbus, OH.

Minutes

  1. Roll Call: George Brenzovich (GB)
  2. 2000 Minutes Read by Marsha Beasley (MB)
  3. Treasurer’s Report: financially sound, only expenditure was 2000 certificates, to be transferred to new Treasurer by MB.
  4. Coach of the Year, Shooter of the Year nominations and ballots handed out by MB. Harry Mullins and David Johnson nominated for coach award.
  1. NCAA Qualifying Procedures Discussion
  2. Long discussion centering around using more than one match as a qualifier. Numerous participants including MB, Gary DeBoy, Harry Mullins, Bill Kelley, Karen Anthony (KA), Alan Joseph, Dave Johnson, Randy Pitney, GB, and others.

    Vote: Is there a desire to change? No clear decision

    Topics of concern:
    Using more than one match.
    Averaging matches
    How do we guarantee consistency in scoring, quality etc? Specific dates of competition
    Accurate and consistent reporting of scores

  3. Discussion on changing Qualifying selection of athletes/teams
  4. Topics of concern:
    Size of individual championship
    Single event team qualifiers
    More at large slots to pick up school representation at NCAA’s
    High quality shooters sitting on sidelines
    3 vs. 4 person teams discussed pro’s and con’s
    Discussed limiting team qualifier size to 5 slots thus freeing up 8 at large indiv slots.
    NCAA cost issue discussed, worried that they would deny something benefiting "rich schools".
    Discussed the possibility that 3 person teams would shrink programs
    Discussed the future of adding 3-p air as a match at the NCAA’s to bring in more school participation.

  5. Targets
  6. Topics:
    Electronic Targets availability and testing at USASNC
    No concern for NCAA worrying about "rich school" advantages
    USA 50ft Target: Wanda Jewell, USAS Rifle Coach, discussed prices coming down, score evaluations and comparisons, desire to have them used.
    2 year change period to allow schools to deplete stock
    Vote: tie vote on whether to change or not.

  7. Website Discussion
  8. Kudos to Michael Ray for CRCA site.
    Discussed how to create an accurate ranking system like other sports.
    Discussed how coaches need to send scores in immediately like other sports.
    Recommended that a standard score reporting form be created for ease of website publication.

  9. New Business
    1. Tom Lowe Range (Atlanta) Annual College Match suggested
    2. -Early October, goal to promote facility use
      -MB and KA questioned NCAA counting the match as a competition date

    3. Qualifier Scoring Standards:
    4. -KA brought up concern that scoring standards in rule book not adequately followed uniformly at matches.
      -AJ suggested creating required neutral scoring oversight group for the matches so that coaches and others are not scoring.

    5. Women’s Rifle as an emerging sport:
    6. -some discussion on whether it could be treated as such, implications of going to a half course for match length. Title IX vs. emerging sport status

    7. West Point’s Ron Wigger volunteered to host the NCAA’s in 2003 on refurbished range.
    8. -Minnesota Shooting Sports Education Center interested in hosting it on their 12 point range with a school sponsor in 2002
      -Murray State "volunteered" to host 2002

    9. Xavier Asst AD: Commented as an observer on how Rifle closed the event to spectators or even considered closing it.
    10. -CRCA moved to ask Games Committee to reconsider spectator access

    11. Election of Officers:
      1. George Brenzovich unchallenged for re-election to President
      2. VP: Bill Kelley nominated, but declined to run
        Gary DeBoy nominated and elected
      3. Sec/Treasurer: Dave Johnson nominated and elected
      4. Exec Committee: Harry Mullins nominated, Alan Joseph nominated to remain on. Unanimous vote in favor of the slate.
