Accommodated Testing

The goal of the Disability Resource Center is to provide equal access to students who are eligible.

Alcohol / Drug Concerns

Many students find their use of alcohol and/or drugs interfering with their educational goals, intimate relationships, health, friendships, and/or family life. Such problems often remain unnoticed until they seem unmanageable.  Visit the Counseling Center for help.

Alcohol Education / Awareness

The mission of The Office of Substance Education & Responsibility is to provide knowledge and information that empowers UK students and community youth to make safer and healthier lifestyle choices with regard to substance use of all types.  Our peer education group – the Student Wellness Ambassadors (SWA) – provides a variety of programming and workshops dedicated to empowering their peers and community youth with tools on how to live safe and balanced lifestyles.

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder

Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often face new academic challenges when they enter college. Changes from the structure of living at home to the independence of living away from home‚ and from the support provided in high school to the expectations in college can be overwhelming for new students.  Visit the Disability Resource Center for assistance.

Behavioral Health - Counseling

Emotional and psychological health are important factors in a student's ability to perform well academically and adjust socially. Students face many stressors from learning to live with roommates to choosing a career path.  The UK Counseling Center provides counseling and "talk" therapy for students with behavioral health issues.  UKCC and UHS frequently collaborate to integrate care of students struggling with psychological concerns.

Medication evaluations for behavioral health disorders are conducted through University Health Services.  Talk therapy and counseling for behavioral health problems is available through the UK Counseling Center.  UKCC and UHS frequently collaborate to integrate care of students struggling with psychological concerns

Birth Control & Contraception

Hormonal birth control methods -- Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP), Ring (NuvaRing) and Patch (Ortho Evra) are very effective, reversible methods of birth control and safe for most young, healthy women.  Visit University Health Services for more information.

Blind / Visual Impairments

The DRC provides a variety of services to students who are blind or visually impaired.

Career and Major Exploration

In today's workplace, you're not limited to just a handful of careers by your major. As you'll discover at the Career Center, any major naturally lends itself to dozens of fields and possible careers.  The UK Counseling Center offers assistance with career decision-making which may be particularly helpful for those whose process is complicated by anxiety, global indecisiveness, family pressures, low self-confidence, and challenges joining selective-admission programs.

Chronic Health Disorders

These disorders can affect the individual’s cognitive and/or motor functions‚ and cause fatigue. Individuals report that these disorders are often acute by nature but on occasion their conditions “flare–up” and present temporary functional limitations.

Communication Disorders

The educational impact of communication disorders often includes difficulty with attending to lectures‚ taking notes‚ organizing and sequencing presentations‚ public speaking‚ and processing speed.

Counseling for International Students

Transitions can be especially challenging when you are far away from people who usually support you. Counselors at the University of Kentucky Counseling Center: Consultation and Psychological Services (UKCC) understand this, and are aware of the many ways that being from another culture can impact your experience here at UK.

Counseling for Students of Color

The University of Kentucky Counseling Center is a supportive, affirming place for all students.  Individual counseling and support groups are available and can be of assistance to those who may have felt marginalized and/or are from traditionally underrepresented racial or ethnic groups.

Counseling for Student with Disabilities

 The Disability Resource Center is the best first point of contact for students with a disability or a disability-related concern. The University of Kentucky Counseling Center: Consultation and Psychological Services offers individual and group counseling for students regardless of disability for personal growth, psychological concerns (related to the disability or not), career indecision, identity issues, substance abuse, and other concerns as long as Center services are able to meet the needs of the individual.

Course Syllabus Disputes

The course syllabus is the first indicator of your instructor's expectations of the course and should offer you a detailed description of both course content and assignments. It functions as an academic "contract" between you and your instructor.

Cultural Issues - Administrative Support

There may be instances where students perceive that they are being discriminated against or sexually harassed. If you want to discuss either of these issues administratively, you should contact either Patty Bender or Terry Allen in the Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity.  The UK Counseling Center and VIP serve as resources for students struggling with the emotional fall-out resulting from discrimination or harassment.

The DRC provides reasonable accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Accommodations may include‚ but are not necessarily limited to: Priority Registration; note taking assistance; sign language or oral interpreters; notification of faculty regarding use of fm systems and in-class accommodations.

Discrimination

The Dean of Students Office is comprised of the central office located in 513 Patterson Office Tower as well as a number of affiliated departments. The central office provides a wide range of services including those related to emergencies‚ notaries‚ and student conduct. Departments affiliated with the Dean of Students Office include Substance Education & Responsibility‚ Student Involvement‚ Disability Resource Center‚ Fraternity & Sorority Affairs‚ New Student & Parent Programs and Off-Campus Student Services.

Eating / Body Image Support

In our society, almost everyone worries at some time about weight, appearance, body image, and size. However, people with eating disorders develop an exaggerated form of such worries. 

Excused Absence Disputes

Throughout any given semester, illness and emergencies sometimes preclude students from attending class. However, there are specific rules that dictate whether these absences are excused. 

FERPA / Student Policy

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended, is  a federal law that protects the privacy and confidentiality of personally identifiable  information contained within student education records.

Grade Disputes & Appeals

If students believe they were graded unfairly on a particular paper, test, or other assignment, or if they believe their final course grade is unfair, they are encouraged to share their concerns with the instructor of the course and/or the chair of the department where the course is taught.

Suicide Prevention

Any fee-paying student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours is eligible for an initial intake appointment for psychological services at the UKCC.  Free consultations are available by phone (257.8701) to anyone concerned about a member of the UK community.  UKCC also provides QPR gatekeeper suicide prevention trainings.
