Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder

Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often face new academic challenges when they enter college. Changes from the structure of living at home to the independence of living away from home‚ and from the support provided in high school to the expectations in college can be overwhelming for new students.  Visit the Disability Resource Center for assistance.

Behavioral Health - Counseling

Emotional and psychological health are important factors in a student's ability to perform well academically and adjust socially. Students face many stressors from learning to live with roommates to choosing a career path.  The UK Counseling Center provides counseling and "talk" therapy for students with behavioral health issues.  UKCC and UHS frequently collaborate to integrate care of students struggling with psychological concerns.

Behavioral Health

Medication evaluations for behavioral health disorders are conducted through University Health Services.  Talk therapy and counseling for behavioral health problems is available through the UK Counseling Center.  UKCC and UHS frequently collaborate to integrate care of students struggling with psychological concerns

Career and Major Exploration

In today's workplace, you're not limited to just a handful of careers by your major. As you'll discover at the Career Center, any major naturally lends itself to dozens of fields and possible careers.  The UK Counseling Center offers assistance with career decision-making which may be particularly helpful for those whose process is complicated by anxiety, global indecisiveness, family pressures, low self-confidence, and challenges joining selective-admission programs.

Career Fairs

A career fair is a great chance to meet prospective employers and to learn more about career options in your field. Students who attend a career fair as early as their freshmen or sophomore year - report increased confidence in their ability to interact with employers and communicate their accomplishments.

Career Planning

Don't wait until your senior year to think about your career! It's important to begin thinking about your future career as soon as you begin your career at UK. A large part of the college experience is finding out who you are and what you will be happy doing.

Chronic Health Disorders

These disorders can affect the individual’s cognitive and/or motor functions‚ and cause fatigue. Individuals report that these disorders are often acute by nature but on occasion their conditions “flare–up” and present temporary functional limitations.

Communication Disorders

The educational impact of communication disorders often includes difficulty with attending to lectures‚ taking notes‚ organizing and sequencing presentations‚ public speaking‚ and processing speed.

Counseling for Student with Disabilities

 The Disability Resource Center is the best first point of contact for students with a disability or a disability-related concern. The University of Kentucky Counseling Center: Consultation and Psychological Services offers individual and group counseling for students regardless of disability for personal growth, psychological concerns (related to the disability or not), career indecision, identity issues, substance abuse, and other concerns as long as Center services are able to meet the needs of the individual.

There may be instances where students perceive that they are being discriminated against or sexually harassed. If you want to discuss either of these issues administratively, you should contact either Patty Bender or Terry Allen in the Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity.  The UK Counseling Center and VIP serve as resources for students struggling with the emotional fall-out resulting from discrimination or harassment.

Deaf / Hard of Hearing

The DRC provides reasonable accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Accommodations may include‚ but are not necessarily limited to: Priority Registration; note taking assistance; sign language or oral interpreters; notification of faculty regarding use of fm systems and in-class accommodations.

Degree Audit (Plan your courses)

The APEX degree audit software will offer an opportunity to evaluate a student’s current progress within their respective degree program and minor. Also provided to students are the means to explore their options from among a list of degree programs, majors, and minors. The students’ exploration can extend to the planned course feature allowing each student to be prepared for both their scheduled advising session and registration period.

Finding a Job

Job searching is a multi-step process that can take some time. The average job search takes 3-6 months! That's why it's important to use your time as wisely as you can and to be targeted in your job search strategies. 

Grade Disputes & Appeals

If students believe they were graded unfairly on a particular paper, test, or other assignment, or if they believe their final course grade is unfair, they are encouraged to share their concerns with the instructor of the course and/or the chair of the department where the course is taught.

Graduate Certificate in College Teaching and Learning

The Graduate Certificate in College Teaching and Learning provides a coherent, integrated approach to helping graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, current faculty, and others develop and document the skills needed as part of conscientious preparation for the full range of faculty responsibilities at a range of institutions of higher education. The Certificate will produce graduates who are highly competitive in the job market in higher education, are quick starters as faculty members, and who can provide leadership in higher education.

Graduate Preparing Future Faculty Program

The University of Kentucky's Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program is part of the national PFF initiative begun in the 1990s. Its purpose is to provide professional development guidance to graduate students who wish to explore or pursue a faculty career at one of the types of institutions of higher education (research universities, regional comprehensive universities, independent universities and colleges, community colleges, or for-profit universities). The overall focus is on readiness for the dynamics of faculty work in the areas of research, teaching, and service. The program emphasizes discovering individual fit and matching it with institutional fit (the workplace's mission, expectations, culture, etc). 

Graduate Programs and Certificates

Graduate School Assistantship

An assistantship is an appointment to specified teaching or research duties. Over 1,500 teaching or research assistantships are available from departments and other units of the university. In addition to an assistantship stipend, full or partial tuition scholarships are available for most assistantship holders.

Graduate School Preparation of Theses and Dissertations

At the University of Kentucky, Master's degrees require the completion of a thesis. Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Education degrees require the completion of a dissertation. The Doctor of Musical Arts degree requires the completion of a project. This work reflects the quality of the program that supervises the student and the university that awards the degree.

Graduate School Prospective Students

The University of Kentucky offers advanced study in 90 program areas awarding doctoral degrees in 61 fields, master's degrees in 120 fields, and 5 specialist degrees. Currently, more than 5,800 graduate students per year are enrolled in these degree programs and other advanced study programs which are centrally administered by the Graduate School.

Graduate Student Fellowships

Fellowships are available in all areas of graduate work and the majority carry a tuition scholarship as well as a stipend. Duration may be from one to three years, depending on fellowship type. While fellowships are formally awarded by the Graduate School, nominations for most fellowships are made by the department in which a student seeks to enroll.

Graduate Student Support Funding

Funds are available to degree-seeking graduate students for assistance with expenses relating to travel to present research at professional meetings only, and may be available for thesis or dissertation research. Student Support funding is not provided for participation in or presentation at professional workshops or tuition for coursework.

Overaward Policy

Residence Life

Suicide Prevention
