Congratulations to Ph.D. student and UK Superfund Research Center (SRC) Trainee Hongyi (Derek) Wan, Student Poster Award Winner at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Research Program (SRP) 2017 Annual Meeting. Derek’s poster, “Understanding the role of Fe/Pd nanoparticles in functionalized membrane systems for PCB degradation,” won first place in the environmental sciences and engineering category of the competition. Over 65 student posters exhibiting the work of SRP grantees from across the country were on display during the annual meeting. The judges’ review criteria for the competition included (1) the poster’s appearance, and (2) the student’s oral presentation, specifically the student’s ability to use stakeholder relevant language to demonstrate knowledge and relevance of the research.
Derek is a fourth year Ph.D. student training under Dr. Dibakar Bhattacharyya in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. Dr. Bhattacharyya and his trainees work on UK SRC Project #5: Chloro-Organic Degradation by Polymer Membrane Immobilized Iron-Based Particle Systems. Derek hopes to continue the important work of making membrane materials for water treatment applications after he graduates. Congratulations on your award, Derek!
Derek Wan accepts the Student Poster Award from SRP Director Dr. William Suk (12/9/17). Derek Wan discusses his research during the poster session at the SRP Annual Meeting (12/8/17).
