Second Annual 'Big Blue Goes Green'

It seems "going green" is on everyone's mind these days, but what does "going green" really mean for Lexington, the University of Kentucky, and individual members of our community?

After attending the second annual “Big Blue Goes Green: A Sustainability Showcase” at the UK Student Center on Tuesday, Sept. 23, people will have the tools to develop their own answers to that question.

The all-day event, which is free and open to the public, will focus on educating students, faculty, staff and the community on environmental and sustainability-related projects and initiatives taking place at UK. The showcase is being overseen by the new President's Sustainability Advisory Committee.

"We are excited to be coordinating this important showcase, and we look forward to increased participation by UK students, faculty and staff," said Mark Williams, co-chair of the committee and associate professor of horticulture in the UK College of Agriculture.

The goal of the showcase is for attendants and participants to learn about all of the "green" projects, curriculums, business practices and research being implemented at UK. The showcase will feature displays, booths, movies and forums. Student attendees can also register to win a bicycle. In addition, the showcase will provide students, faculty and community members the opportunity to learn about sustainability volunteer opportunities both on and off campus.

In addition to the booths and displays that will be open all day, a series of discussion panels featuring sustainability topics will begin at 9 a.m. A panel discussion with UK students, Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry, Deputy Secretary of the Energy and Environment Cabinet Henry Clay "Hank" List, and Vice President for UK Facilities Management Bob Wiseman will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Small Ballroom of the Student Center. The discussion will center on UK’s and Lexington’s roles in sustainability issues.

"Last year in hosting the first event we frequently heard comments from numerous attendees that they did not realize the full extent of sustainability projects, research, classes and green business practices taking place at UK. The showcase goes a long way toward filling the information gap on this topic among faculty, staff and students," said Wiseman.
