Water & Stormwater
The Water and Stormwater team of the Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community met on March 14, 2006. Approximately nine participants attended with representation from LFUCG, UK, KY Division of Water, Bluegrass PRIDE, and Kentucky American Water Company. The group discussed the need for more water quality education, especially considering that the KY Environmental Education Council's research shows citizens do not think they affect their water, although water quality is perceived as the #1 environmental problem in KY. Stormwater problems associated with new construction and lack of green space in and around Fayette County was also discussed. A few educational action items were discussed as potential project for the group:
1) Develop and post signs in each watershed in Fayette Co. These signs would be posted on streets and roads noting when one is entering or leaving a specific watershed (e.g. Wolf Run). Signs could also be posted on kiosks in malls or in local shopping centers explaining the new signage and what they mean (e.g. "What is a watershed?").
2) Utilize ads being developed through the Commonwealth Water Education Project (www.inyourwater.org) by adding local information (LexCall) and placing ads in community newsletters and neighborhood newspapers.
