HPC Getting Started: Introduction
Getting Started with High Performance Computing at UK
The HPC resources at the University of Kentucky are provided without charge to researchers at UK and at other research institutions in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, along with their collaborators. The facility is funded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and supports millions of dollars worth of research grants. These resources provide a fundamental infrastructure component for researchers wishing to seek new federal funding.
UK has been a leader in HPC for scientific research and teaching since 1987, and its supercomputers have ranked as high as #66 on the world-wide Top 500 list of supercomputers. These facilities are available to the faculty at UK and to research institutions throughout the state. Active research areas include physics, astronomy, biochemistry, pharmacy, medicine, mechanical engineering, and many others. The University also participates in networks of research supercomputers and collaborates with researchers across the country and around the world. For a brief history of HPC here, see our HPC History at UK page.
