Using Wi-Fi: Connect With Care


If you’re traveling this summer, chances are you’ll encounter a Wi-Fi hotspot (network) or two.

Wi-Fi in airports, hotels, train stations, coffee shops, and other public places can be convenient, but they’re often not secure, and can leave you at risk.

Whether you’re entertaining the kids by streaming a video on a tablet, downloading new travel apps on your smartphone or even taking your tablet poolside, there are precautions you should take to make sure your personal information is safe.

Dell Challenge to Award $15,000 for Solutions that Empower Women and Girls


Undergraduate and graduate students from any major are encouraged to submit proposals by September 23, 2013 for the Dell Empowering Women Challenge. Students’ submissions should “propose initiatives to empower women and girls, thereby creating business opportunities and recognizing female influence.” Fifty finalists will receive mentors to develop their ideas and the winning team will be awarded $15,000 in December 2013. Password Upgrade Reminder

UPDATED: November 26, 2013

The link blue password policy for UK students and campus employees will be updated Spring 2014. The revised policy creates a better user experience and increase security while keeping current with computing trends. Included in the revision are changes to the expiration timeframe and minimum length. The number of lockout attempts and a new default password were implemented in Fall 2013.

Google Apps for Education Available for UK Students & Employees


Google is currently offering educational institutions hosting for email, calendars, and other productivity tools through Google Apps for Education, an integrated communication and collaboration solution. This product enables UK to provide students and employees with UK-branded, advertising-free access to a variety of popular cloud-based tools at a low cost to the university. All current employees and students can create an UK Google Apps account.

5th Annual Active Learning Grants Program

Receive a $10,000 Research Grant: LectureTools Customers Eligible for Echo360 Active Learning Grants Program.

This one-of-a-kind program has recognized the importance of research by awarding a quarter of a million dollars in grant funding to Echo360 client institutions during the past five years.

This year, the program will once again award six $10,000 grants to institutions, including a new grant created exclusively for LectureTools users!

Public Folders Migration


Several years ago, Microsoft announced public folders would be discontinued, but did not provide an exact date. The remaining public folders need to be phased out by June 30, 2014 as support continues to decrease and disk space is limited.
