UK’s InCommon Membership

For several months now, UK has been a member of InCommon: a coalition of US education and research communities supporting a common federated identity management framework. This framework permits UK faculty and researchers to log in to certain information resources without having to obtain a user ID and password for each resource. Instead, they log in using their LinkBlue account and password.

As a result, UK faculty and researchers can access the following websites and resources and authenticate using their UK LinkBlue account and password:

Apple and Adobe Conduct Training on UK’s Campus

UKIT sponsored two vendor visits to campus during the spring. Presentations were made to full houses, including standing room only, for Apple iBooks Author and ePubs as well as for a preview of Adobe’s Creative Suite.

e-Signature Regulations Coming Soon

The e-Signatures Workgroup Committee developed a new Administrative Regulation and new Business Procedure on electronic signatures. The university may require that members of the university community use electronic signatures to conduct certain transactions that previously required handwritten signatures and approvals on paper documents. Increasing, improved efficiency of internal transactions that require authorization is a desired outcome. These proposed regulations establish the policies and procedures by which the university:

International Calling Cards Update

On October 1, 2011, UKIT Communications and Network Systems (CNS) distributed calling cards that were required to be used to place international phone calls from UK telephones.

UKIT CNS is now developing a direct dial solution that will enable departments with VoIP phones to place international calls without the need of a calling card. This solution will be available for VoIP users beginning in August 2013. VoIP users will still need to use the International Calling cards until this date.

Transitioning from Public to Private IP Addresses

As the University of Kentucky’s networks grow at a rapid rate, the university is quickly running into scalability and security issues with devices being on public IP addresses. To solve this problem, UKIT will migrate as many devices as possible off the public IP address ranges.

Desktop Virtualization Update

The Desktop Virtualization project is in full production mode. Over 1,600 users (600 unique IDs) were recorded in April 2012 as the semester ended. The UK Young Library deployed a virtual desktop for its first floor public computers and the computers in the Hub. They plan to deploy the virtual desktop and virtual applications for access to library resources on all public computers in all libraries across campus in the upcoming months.

Updates to Campus Dell Premier Portal

The University’s Dell Premier Portal website (accessed from http://www.uky.edu/ebuy/) will soon be updated to include a choice between a 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7 standard image.
