Study Abroad Opportunities

Numerous study abroad opportunities exist for anyone interested in studying Italian in Italy and learning more about the culture first-hand. Some programs are commercial language institutes run by Italians in major cities. These have the advantage of offering courses on demand continously throughout the year, at various levels, taught by native speakers.

Many American universities offer study abroad programs. These may focus on language or on some other speciality, such as art history or architecture. Such programs typically follow the American academic calendar and therefore “dovetail” well with regular attendance and scheduling requirements needed to earn a degree here. The programs will make most of the arrangements (housing, meals, courses, field trips) and students may simply be required to book their own plane ticket. Costs vary widely depending on length of the program, type of lodging, how many field trips are programmed, meals included, how many credits taken, etc. Lodging may be with other American students in hotels, in a villa, or with Italian host families; it depends on the particular program. Frequently these programs are held during the summer. Such programs have the advantage of fitting more easily into requirements for graduation from another American university. One normally needs to apply to American programs by February or March to receive fullest consideration. Please contact Dr. Allaire (allaire@uky.edu) in advance to determine equivalency of courses offered by programs that are not officially affiliated with the University of Kentucky.

Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS)

A locally-sponsored possibility is the KIIS (Kentucky Institute for International Studies) programs. Precise dates, itinerary and content will vary depending on the year and the organizer. In the past, the KIIS program in Italy has offered courses in Drawing, Renaissance Art, Travel Journal for Artists, the Humanist Tradition, with special seminars in Art History and Political Science. There is also a Basic Conversational Italian course. [Note: At present, this course does not fulfill the requirements of first- or second-semester Italian language for U.K. students, but would be a valuable enhancement this experience abroad.]

Another Kentucky Institute program visits classical and Renaissance sites in Italy and Greece. Three weeks are spent in Greece, including excursions to Crete, Santorini, Corinth, Mycenae and other locations. In Italy, the program will spend three days each in Paestum and Pompeii before moving up to Rome for the remainder of the stay. There will be time for independent travel to Florence and Venice.
