Submitting Assignments via E-mail

In addition to any comments or questions you may have concerning this course, you have the option to submit daily homework assignments to me via e-mail. All course-related e-mail messages and assignments should be sent to:

aubel2@uky.edu

Keep in mind that I sometimes receive in excess of 50 e-mail messages per day, so it's important that you list your course number and subject on the subject line of your message like this:

Subject: ENG102, your subject

This will allow my e-mail program to automatically route your message to a special priority mailbox I've set up for this course. Without ENG102 (all caps, no spaces) in the subject line, your message will remain in my general "In Box," and it may be days before I get around to reading it.

Next, type your full name and section number on the first line of your message like this:

John Smith, Sec. 072
or
Mary Jones, Sec. 072

Note: Assignments and/or messages sent to me that do not follow this format may be discarded unread.

If you're submitting an assignment via e-mail, it's best to embed your assignment in simple ASCII format in your e-mail message. You can compose your assignment off-line on your word processor and then paste it into the message section of your e-mail program. See your program's documentation for the correct copy and paste commands.

Avoid using special formating characters (i.e. bold, italics, etc.) within your message. Though this might make the message look good on your computer, chances are my computer will just see it as an unreadable mess, especially if you're using something other than Eudora as your e-mail program.

Do not send more than one assignment per e-mail message. Also, short essays, unit essays, and drafts of unit essays may not be submitted via e-mail.

Do not attach files to your e-mail messages. Problems with attached files include viruses, incompatible file formats, and file corruption. Messages with files attached will be discarded unread.

Rules governing late assignments as well as spelling, grammar, typographic, and other errors will count the same as they would in a regular lesson. Neatness, and readability are always important.

Class Listserv

In addition to regular e-mail assignments announced in class, we will have a class listserv that will act as an electronic bulletin board for the entire class. The class listserv is private; only you, your classmates (both sections), and myself will have access to your posts. The list will serve as the preferred medium for class announcements.

What is a Listserv?

A listserv is a mailing list that works via e-mail. To be on a listserv, each user needs to subscribe to the list. Once you subscribe to a particular listserv, you automatically receive all the messages sent to that list by the other members of the list. Likewise, when you send an e-mail message to the list's address, the server will automatically forward that message to every other member of the list.

How do I subscribe to the List?

To join the list you need to send a one-time e-mail message to UK's listserv adminstrator at:

LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU

Do not include a subject, but on the first line of your message type the following informaton:

subscribe ubelhor first_name last_name

Of course, be sure to substitute your own first and last name in the appropriate locations. You will then receive an e-mail message verifying that you have been added to the listerv and providing you with detailed instructions on using it. (Note: Do not use "handles" or nicknames. Failure to use your real name may result in your subscription request being denied.)

Must I use my UK e-mail account to subscribe?

No. If you are using another mail server such as AOL or Hotmail, you may use those accounts to subscribe to the list. However, if you have multiple e-mail accounts you may only subscribe using one.

How do I post messages to the List?

That's easy. Once you've subscribed to the list just send your message to the list's e-mail address, UBELHOR@LSV.UKY.EDU and it will automatically be posted to the list. Remember, though, that any message sent to the listserv address will be circulated to everyone else on the list. Do not send private messages to the listserv address!

How do I get off the List?

You will automatically be removed from the list at the end of the semester.

Where can I get help with a Listserv?

You can get individual help by contacting the Information Systems Help Desk in McVey Hall, room 113, or by calling 257-2249. You may also send an e-mail to helpdesk@uky.edu.
