Short Essay 1 --
The Four Functions of Mythology
Write an essay in which you discuss a myth that you are familiar with which fulfills at least one of the
four functions Campbell discusses in his essay. This essay should include a description of the myth, but
the description must be in your own words and should not exceed one-half of the essay's total length.
Length: 2-3 pages.
Due: Tuesday, January 22.
Grading Criteria: In addition to the standard criteria that applies to all assignments (i.e. grammar,
spelling, page format, paragraph development, length, etc.), I will be evaluating the following components:
- Summary: Do you fairly summarize the myth being evaluated? Is the summary in your own words?
- Analysis: Have you analyzed the myth in terms of at least one of the four functions described
in the Campbell essay?
