Email and Listserv

In addition to regular assignments announced in class, we will have a class listserv that will act as an electronic bulletin board for the entire class. The class listserv is private; only you, your classmates, and myself will have access to your posts. The listserv will serve as the preferred medium for class announcements.

What is a Listserv?

A listserv acts as a clearinghouse for email messages on a particular topic. In this case, the topic is our course. Once you subscribe to a particular listserv, you automatically receive all the messages posted to that list by the other members of the list. Likewise, when you send an email message to the list's address, the server will automatically forward that message to every other member of the list.

How do I subscribe to the List?

To join the list you need to send a one-time email message to UK's listserv adminstrator at:

LISTSERV@LSV.UKY.EDU

Leave the Subject line blank. But on the first line of your message proper type the following informaton:

SUBSCRIBE  UBELHOR104  Firstname  Lastname

Of course, be sure to substitute your own first and last name in the appropriate locations. (Note: Do not use "handles" or nicknames. Failure to use your real name may result in your sign-on request being denied.) You will then receive an email message verifying that you have been added to the listerv and providing you with detailed instructions on using it. (Note: I have to personally approve all subscription requests, thus it may take 1-2 days before you receive a reply.)

Must I use my UK email account to subscribe?

No. If you are using another mail server such as AOL or Hotmail, you may use those accounts to subscribe to the list. However, if you have multiple email accounts you may only subscribe using one of them.

How do I post messages to the List?

That's easy. Once you've subscribed to the list just send your message to the list's email address,

UBELHOR104@LSV.UKY.EDU

and it will automatically be posted to the list. Remember, though, that any message sent to the listserv address will be circulated to everyone else on the list. Do not send private messages to me or your classmates to the list address!

How do I get off the List?

You will automatically be removed from the list at the end of the semester.
