  1. Read Freud, "Erotic Wishes and Dreams" (CP 18-20). Then in 1-2 paragraphs discuss 1 of the following topics from your readings:
    1. Why does Freud believe that "repressed infantile sexual wishes" are the strongest motivation behind dreams and their primary content? Does he provide convincing evidence for this belief?
    2. How might a dream express erotic wishes and at the same time appear innocent of sexual content? What might cause this apparent contradiction?
    3. How does Freud define symbols as they appear in dreams? What examples does he provide? Do these seem like sexual symbols to you?
  2. Read Jung, "The Importance of Dreams" (CP 21-26). Then in 1-2 paragraphs, discuss 1 of the following topics from your readings:
    1. How does Jung define a symbol? Why does he believe that people need to use symbols to express themselves?
    2. What is "mystical participation"? In what way is this characteristic of primitive people relevant to modern people and their problems of identity?
    3. What is "free association" and what led Jung to eventually abandon it as a method of psychoanalysis?
    4. What relationships does Jung see between dreams and myth?
