  1. Read "Planning and Drafting," (PH 3a-b, 38-50).
  2. Read "The Story of Creation from Genesis" (CP 8-10) and "The Story of Prometheus and Pandora from Hesiod's Works and Days" (CP 11-12). In a well-focused paragraph, show how either of these stories fits any one of Campbell's four functions of mythology.
  3. Print a copy of essay assignment 1 and bring to next class.

  1. Read "How Men and Women Got Together" (CP 13-15), and "The Coming of Enkidu" from The Epic of Gilgamesh (CP 16-19). Then, in 2 well-developed paragraphs, respond to one of the following prompts:
    1. Compare gender roles and sexual attitudes in the story of Adam and Eve with "How Men and Women Got Together."
    2. Compare the relationship of man to nature and man to the gods in the story of Adam and Eve with "The Coming of Enkidu."
  2. Choose the topic of your first essay. Be prepared to discuss it in class on Wednesday.

  1. Urban legends.
  1. Visit the Internet's largest collection of urban legends at http://www.snopes.com and scan through several of the categories posted there. Then find one urban legend posted on the web site that you thought was real and describe it in 1-2 paragraphs, explaining when and from whom you first heard the story. You may be asked to share your composition with the rest of the class.
