Cross-Striations in Enamel

This is a section through mature enamel. Enamel rods pass from the D-E junction to the surface of the enamel layer (lower right to upper left in this image - the axis indicated by the black line). The rods exhibit cross-striations with the periodicity of about 4µm. Each striation (band) represents the amount of enamel deposited each day during odontogenesis.
