Hunter-Schreger Bands in Cross-Section

Hunter-Schreger bands are not demonstrable in cross-section as all enamel rods (A) are similarly oriented in the plane of section. The density of enamel decreases slightly from the surface to the D-E junction (B) and from the incisal edge to the cervical margin. It is also less dense in deciduous than permanent teeth. Note structures labelled "E". These are defects in the enamel layer referred to as enamel lamellae - defects that alolow aciuds etc. to pass from the enamel surface to the DEJ. These represent Identify C and D.
