Collagen Fibers in the Periodontal Ligament

This is a periodontal ligament (A) stained with Mallory's trichrome where collagen fibers stain blue. Note how these fibers extend from the cementum (B) to alveolar bone (C). In addition to collagen fibers, an elastic-like fiber - oxytalan has been described. Oxytalan fibers can only be demonstrated by specific staining techniques. The significance of their presence, if any, is not clear. What are D?

Legend

A - periodontal ligament
B - cementum

C - alveolar bone
D - osteocytes
