Principal Fiber Groups

This diagram shows the various groups of collagen fibers arranged within the periodontal ligament, anchoring the tooth to bone. These groups of fibers are referred to as principal fibers and are grouped into: a gingival fiber group (fibers that do not insert into alveolar bone). These include gingival fibers (G), circumferential fibers (not shown) and transseptal fibers (T). A dentoalveolar fiber group (those inserting into alveolar bone): alveolar crest fibers (A), horizontal fibers (H), oblique fibers (O), (peri)apical fibers (P) and interradicular fibers (not shown, see next image).

Legend

A - alveolar crest fibers
G - gingival fibers
H - horizontal fibers

O - oblique fibers
P - (peri)apical fibers
T - transseptal fibers
