of Music in Music Education
For Distance Learning and Summer Students at the University of Kentucky
Spring 2003
Description
The existing Master's Degree Program in Music Education (MMME) will soon be available to students through distance learning technology and summer offerings. This program is designed for music teachers who would like to pursue a master's degree as well as keeping their regular music teaching job during the year. The degree can be completed by taking one distance-learning course per semester for four semesters and two-to-three summers of on-campus study (6-9 credit hours per summer). You may begin this program anytime. Admissions procedure and requirements are similar to other graduate degrees.
The current requirements for the MMME degree can be met as follows:
I. Core Required Courses: 12 hours
MUS 600 ------------------------ 3 hrs (Internet course to be offered Summer Session I, 2003)
MUS 601 ------------------------ 3 hrs (Internet course to be offered Summer Session II, 2003)
Music Theory (MUS 578)--- summer ------------3 hrs (regular summer/fall course)
Music History/Literature---- summer
-------------3 hrs (regular summer/fall/spring course)
II. Music Education Courses: 12 hours
Summer music education workshops or courses -----------------------6 hrs
The Orff Schulwerk Training Course is usually offered during the last two weeks of June. You may sign up for 2 credits by completing the two-week course. Additional one or two credits can be obtained by completing extended written assignments.
MUS 660-201 Music Ed: Methods & Materials (different sub-titles)-----------3 hrs
Experiential Project (MUS 550 or MUS 767) -----------------------------3 hrs (off-campus project)
OR: Other combinations totaling 12 hours of music education courses.
III.
Electives: --------6 hrs. in any areas
(other summer courses or courses in the
distance learning catalog)
NOTE: Up to nine hours
of graduate credits from other institution or UK post-baccalaureate credits can
be transferred into this program.
TOTAL: 30 hours
NOTE: Students wishing to concentrate on Orff-Schulwerk Training
should include twelve hours of Orff-Schulwerk credits. You may apply the twelve
hours required for the Graduate Orff
Schulwerk Certificate
towards the Masters Degree in Music Education.
Students in West Virginia can apply for in-state tuition
through their Coordinator of the Common Academic Market Office.
