Lesson 1

 

Objectives: 6, 8, 9,

  • Recognize that opera uses all components of stage performance and of all the fine arts.
  • Identify some characteristics of opera by comparing opera and Broadway musicals.
  • Name one or more aspects of opera or opera production in which they might be interested.

 

Materials

  • Master 1

Procedures:

1. In small groups, use the top half of Master Worksheet 1, to name and list different tpes of performances, then indicate components that could be found in each.

2. In small groups, use the bottom half of Master Worksheet 1, to identify some characteristice of Broadway musicals in the following categories:

  • Time music was written
  • Scale
  • Artificial amplification
  • Singing style and difficulty
  • Spoken dialogue
  • Solos
  • Language
  • Emotional content
  • Historical/cultural context

3. In small groups, identify characteristics of opera comparing some commonly acknowledged differences between Broadway muscals and operas.
