University of Kentucky Graduate Orff-Schulwerk Certificate


Music teachers from Kentucky as well as from other places can now enroll for credits to be applied towards a new University of Kentucky Graduate Certificate in Orff Schulwerk. The University of Kentucky is one of only a few institutions in the United States with Orff Schulwerk Concentration at the graduate level. Orff Schulwerk is the music approach created by composers Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman. It is a way to teach and learn music using poems, rhymes, games, songs, and dances as basic materials. The emphasis is on students as improvisers and performers. The University of Kentucky offers Schulwerk Teacher Training courses in the summers, taught by the most prestigious summer faculty from different parts of the country. The content follows strict guidelines of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. Training is given at Levels 1, 2, 3 and advanced masters courses in different topics such as curriculum design and other topics.

Curriculum: TOTAL 12 hours

1. Orff Teacher Training Level One -----------MUS 560/561------------- 2-4 cr.

2. Orff Teacher Training Level Two ----------MUS 560/561 -------------2-4 cr.

             (Prerequisite: Orff Teacher Training Level 1)

3. Orff Teacher Training Level Three --------MUS 560/561 --------------2-4 cr.

or Orff Master Courses---MUS 666---3 cr.

             (Prerequisite: Orff Teacher Training Level 2)

4. Certificate Project ---------------------------MUS 666 -------------------1-3 cr.

               (Prerequisite: Orff Teacher Training Level 2)
 
 

Each student must complete all four of the components, each at two credits minimum, for a total of 12 credit hours. Each component is offered at variable credits. The certificate project can be done anytime during the year, on or off the UK campus.

All credits earned in this certificate can be applicable towards the Master of Music in Music Education degree (MMME) or the Rank I in Music Education Program.*

*For courses taken at the post-baccalaureate status, 9 hrs. can be transferred to the Master's Degree(MMME), 12 hrs. can be transferred to the Rank I Program.

Admission Requirements:

Award of the Certificate:

Completion of certificate curriculum requirements with a minimum of 3.0 GPA within five years.
