Barbara
Strauss Reed

Barbara Strauss Reed is associate
professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies in the School of Communication,
Information and Library Studies at Rutgers University. Her teaching areas currently
are magazine journalism, media ethics and law. Currently, she serves for the second
time as a member of the Elected Standing Committee of the Association for Education
in Journalism & Mass Communication. She received the Edward Trayes Award from
the Mass Communication & Society Division, was chair of two other divisions, and
chair twice of the Commission on the Status of Women, once when it was a committee.
Her years in the media include work with Associated Press, Young & Rubican advertising,
KCET-channel 28 public television in Los Angeles, and reportorial positions with
two newspapers plus public relations for the first national conference on children
and television. She earned her bachelor's degree from Miami University in Oxford,
Ohio; her master's from the University of Minnesota, and her doctorate from Ohio
University. She has published in the leading journals in the discipline, and is
co-editor of a book about the ethnic press: Outsiders in 19th Century Press
History. She has chapters in nine books, including three about women and media.
She serves as an editorial board member of two journals.
