.......An honor graduate of SECC's Computer Repair
Technology program is now Southeast's own Network
Administrator/Electrical Technician II.
.......Valerie Saylor says she has worked here at Southeast
for eight years in one capacity or another, but, before SECC's
career doors began opening for Saylor, she was an honor
student.
.......Saylor began working at SECC as a tutor in
Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics up to and including
Calculus, and English.
......."Shortly after that, I was hired part time to help in
the Computer Department," Saylor said. "I think my job
titles have been Assistant to the Computer Manager, Lab
Assistant, and now Network Administrator."
.......Saylor comments that she loves her job here at
SECC.
......."I am not the type of person who could sit at a desk
and do the same thing day after day. I like to move around
and do different things everyday, and this job definitely gives
me that opportunity. I work with different types of
problems," she said.
.......According to Saylor, even though she loves her job,
she didn't really make a "conscious decision to do what I do."
......."Sure I signed up for the Computer Repair program,
but I really didn't know what I would do after that," said
Saylor. "Zelma Forbes, my Trig and Calculus instructor,
recommended me for my first job here at Southeast. It was
for part-time work, and I really thought it was a temporary
thing. But I liked the people and the work so much that I
decided I would like to work at Southeast permanently."
.......There is another side to Saylor that may be less
stressful than her job requirements.
......."My biggest hobby is dog training and showing; I am
the treasurer and training director of the Cumberland Valley
Kennel Club in Harlan," said Saylor, who is also a volunteer
for the Harlan County Humane Society.
.......Saylor owns six dogs, three of which are Doberman
Pinschers and the other three mixed breeds.
.......Saylor says of her dogs, "They are like children to
me. My time away from work is spent taking care of and
playing with my brood."
