Guidelines for the Submission of Articles
for the
Applied Analyses Section of the Journal

This document outlines guidelines for those who wish to submit articles (both regular articles and review articles) for the Journal.

Purpose and Goal

The purpose of this Journal is to provide a forum for important agricultural economics issues, with content designed to be accessible to all of those interested in agricultural economics, and to serve as a source for insightful readings for classroom use. This Journal particularly will serve as a scholarly forum for those individuals who, by nature of their positions and appointments, have not been well served by the traditional quantitative technical journals in agricultural economics. Articles chosen for publication in this Journal will be selected because of their interest to a broad spectrum of agricultural economists regardless of where they are geographically located.

The editors' goal is to produce the most widely read journal in agricultural economics. Selection of articles will, in part, be based on reviewers' assessments of the portion of the subscribers that will likely read the article. The editors define issues to include not only topics dealing with rural, agricultural and environmental policy, but also topics dealing with the development and implementation of extension education programs, undergraduate and graduate-level techniques, and research methodology including articles that review and compare the implications of past research on a particular problem. Since one objective of this Journal is to communicate with a broad array of agricultural economists, including those who are not quantitative researchers, emphasis will also be placed on the use of words and charts rather than mathematics and econometrics to communicate ideas.

As you are preparing your manuscript, consider the following...

1. This Journal reviews articles on a continuous basis for possible publication. These articles may be of any topic consistent with the objectives of the Journal.

2. Manuscript writers should note that the intended readership of this Journal is broader than for most other scholarly journals in agricultural economics. This Journal is not a repository for research employing quantitative model building. Authors should realize that manuscripts that primarily focus on mathematical model building and presenting the numerical results of quantitative modeling efforts (i.e econometric parameter estimates) will not normally be accepted for inclusion in this Journal.

3. Part of the review process attempts to identify articles on topics that will be widely read and cited, not articles that are of interest to only a small subset of readers. Copies of the evaluation form used by reviewers are available from the editors on request.

4. This Journal places great emphasis on high quality scholarly writing. As a result, the outcome of the review process depends, in part, on the clarity of the writing. Prior to submission, authors are encouraged to get assistance from colleagues and others who might be helpful in improving the quality of the manuscript to ensure that the writing is clear.

5. Three copies of the manuscript should be mailed to the editors. The editors will review the manuscript to assure that it is consistent with the objectives of this Journal. If not, the manuscript may be returned by the editors to the authors with suggested modifications to make the content more suitable.

6. If, in the view of the editors, the manuscript is broadly consistent with the objectives of this Journal, it will be sent to one or more reviewers. In addition to editorial council members, the reviewers may include other agricultural economists with particular expertise in the subject matter. These reviewers will attempt to provide constructive criticism for improving the quality of the manuscript. Ordinarily, the initial review should take from 60-90 days.

7. Although in a few instances, a manuscripts might be accepted at the conclusion of the initial review process, in most instances, modifications (minor or major) will be needed. Revised manuscripts may be subject to addition review(s).

8. Manuscripts accepted for publication will be subject to professional editing to improve the clarity of the writing. A marked-up paper copy will be returned to the author. The author will be asked to return a corrected hard copy and a copy of each manuscript on disk using Word Perfectþ or other standard word processor. As a final check, a galley proof will be supplied to the author. Authors or their host institutions are required to pay a $65 charge per page of published text. Individual authors will be billed by the SAEA.

Three copies of the manuscript should be mailed to:
