Web-based Strategies for Research Subject Recruitment

Nancy Harrington

Scott Johnson

The purpose of this manuscript is to describe and advocate for an innovative web-based strategy for subject recruitment. The manuscript details specific technologies that can be used to minimize problems inherent in traditional recruitment protocols and more closely approximate the gold standard of recruitment, especially given the need for specific subject inclusion/exclusion criteria. We begin with a brief discussion of the concerns inherent in subject recruitment for social science research. This is followed with an examination of specific strategies for minimizing these concerns using web- and other media-based technology compared with more traditional recruitment strategies. The benefits and costs of each approach are discussed in the context of two laboratory-based substance abuse prevention experiments. Outline, Manuscript, and JOBEM submission guidelinest*
