As We Weep

(Inspired by Amy and Angela Lakeberg)

Your life began within our view
so frail and full of doubt,
Would you survive the storm to come
or would your light go out?

Your parents private fear, so great,
All wondered how they bore,
To have to choose, forced to decide,
That both might be no more.

A million eyes, with bated breath,
Minutes equaled days,
We saw your chance for precious life
fade in and out of haze.

Hope of hope, prayer on prayer,
A sacrifice of need,
Into the sunset, ending day,
Fate raced at break-neck speed.

And as I watched I clutched my child
and wondered if were I,
To have to choose, to seal his fate,
And I began to cry.

Oh how each hand is dealt and falls,
The stakes so very steep,
Some flowers bloom, then fade away
as often as we weep.
