Course Description:
This course addresses the use and integration of educational technologies
in classroom instruction, including PowerPoint, Web Page Design,
Spread Sheets, database and word processing. This course will address the four themes of the conceptual framework for the UK professional education unit: research, reflection, learning, and leading. Students will be given the opportunity to review, analyze, discuss, and apply research from diverse perspectives in education. Reflection will also be integrated into students’ learning opportunities through the production of written essays, group discussion and media production to help students take advantage of the analytical and problem-solving skills that comprise critical professional reflection on one’s own teaching. This course emphasizes the commitment of the professional education unit to ensure that its graduates move into their professional lives equipped for life-long learning as educators who will be active in leading colleagues in their schools, districts, and professional organizations. The ultimate goal in addressing these four themes is to produce teacher leaders who work together to improve student learning among diverse populations and improve education in Kentucky and beyond. Additionally, students will be prepared to serve a more diverse population of learners through exploration of how all people learn.
Course Goal and Objectives
This goal of the course is to help the inservice teacher integrate
appropriate technology in their instruction. Specifically, the course
addresses the following objectives:
1) Participants will be able to use a variety of technology applications
for educational purposes
2) Participants will learn to integrate technology into their teaching
strategies to enhance and manage learning.
3) Participants will develop a intellectual framework for critiquing and designing educational experiences incorporating media
Required Materials
All students will be required to have a USB pen drive to transfer work
to and from class.
Competencies
You will be asked to complete exercises that show your ability to use
the different technologies covered during the course.
Expectations and Grading
To do well in EDS 544, you should come prepared to all class sections
and actively participate in them. You must complete your assignments
fully and turn them in on time. No late assignments will be accepted
unless the instructors are contacted beforehand.
Framework Paper/Presentation- 25%
Final project - 25%
Midterm - 25%
Weekly Assignments - 25% (this will consist of reading reactions, minor software assignments etc.)
Reading Reactions:
Describe (the point or concept of the reading)
Analyze (the arguments e.g. how valid are the points they are making and why you agree or disagree)
Personalize (Provide a case that supports your analysis)
Plagiarism
Students should familiarize themselves with the Student Code regarding
plagiarism (section 6.3.1), which can be obtained from the office
of the Dean of Students or retrieved from http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/Code/part2.html
section 6.3.1. Plagiarism of any type will result in a failing grade.
Class Attendance and Participation
Class attendance is required for all class sessions. Information will
be presented in each class that is not available through other means.
Successful
completion of course objectives requires that students have hands-on
experience with hardware and software that is used during class sessions.
Students are allowed one missed class after which an unexcused absence
will be counted as a failed assignment.
