Noncontact Diffuse Optical Assessment of Pressure Ulcer and Therapy
Early detection of pressure ulcers is the key for effective ulcer management and for reducing subsequent treatment costs. Measurement of deep tissue hemodynamics that affect tissue damage/healing is essential for the early diagnosis of ulcers and for the optimization of treatment (e.g., electrical stimulation (ES)) since pressure ulcers usually originate from deep tissues attached to the bone. The objective of this study is to develop and validate a novel non-contact near-infrared diffuse optical system, which will allow us to probe blood flow and oxygenation in deep tissues during ES without touching vulnerable/ulcerous tissue surfaces.
Development of diffuse optical spectroscopies for monitoring cerebral blood flow and oxygenation in mouse stroke model
To adapt and use a diffuse optical device for monitoring of cerebral blood flow and oxygenation in mice undergoing repeated transient forebrain ischemia (TFI), which may assist in understanding the TFI mechanism in protection/promotion of stroke.
Noncontact Diffuse Optical Quantification of Hemodynamic Contrast in Breast Tumor
This project is to develop a novel noncontact diffuse optical system for hemodynamic assessment of breast tumors. A noncontact fiber-optic probe with achromatic doublet lenses will be assembled and connected to an existing diffuse correlation spectroscopy flow-oximeter that was previously developed in our laboratory. The noncontact probe will be used to scan over the breasts in patients with tumors, sequentially. It is expected that hemodynamic (blood flow and oxygenation) contrasts in breast tumors exist and can be detected by the optical scanning. We anticipate that noncontact measurements have higher sensitivity and accuracy in measuring tumor-to-normal contrasts than contact measurements.
