Worksheet on Imperial Imagery
Based on your reading and thinking about the assignment in Mango for Tuesday (pp.15-16 on Constantine and 45-48 on other imperial images in Constantinople), complete the following worksheet. Use the process exemplified in class today as your model.
1. What materials are commonly used for public statuary?
2. Official statuary can typically be found in what types of sites (be specific as to nature)?
3. What are some of the functions that certain types of public images served (describe in phrases rather than single words)?
4. What offices and/or ranks did those represented in or commissioning imperial images hold?
5. Based on these readings, identify some attitudes expressed toward earlier or older works of art:
6. What authority did the Emperor's image hold and how was this justified (cite two examples)?
7. What is the nature of the sources we are using to construct the emerging profile of imperial images? That is, what kinds of documents are we reading and what is the relationship of their creators to imperial power, to the images themselves?
8. List on the reverse any other works you might be familiar with from antiquity (particularly Rome) which offer precedents or parallels to some of those described in these sources (eg., equestrian statue from Rome and one described here, or a figure on top of a column in a public forum, etc.):
