The Oz series from Caliber Comics is based on L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz tales, thoroughly updated by Stuart Kerr and Ralph Griffith. This is one of several comic-book adaptations of Baum's Oz books. The grim-'n'-gritty, 1990s version of Tin Man whom we see on the cover is much closer to Baum's original character than to the kindly, beloved Ray Bolger we know from the MGM movie The Wizard of Oz. The black-and-white art in this series is strong and stark. The Tin Man, Nick Chopper, and his familiar colleagues Scarecrow, Lion and Dorothy Gale have fallen under the control of the evil Nome King. A group of Freedom Fighters, including Tik-Tok and Hungry Tiger, seek to return good Queen Ozma to the throne of Oz. The violent battles are not children's fare. Tin Man is, of course, made of the well-known element Tin, a low-melting metal which is easily worked and resists corrosion.
