Library Assignment #1This assignment is due on Friday, Oct 19.
Purpose/Objective: To have the student
demonstrate the ability to use the library and physically locate shelved journal articles, a shelved book, and information on microform/microfiche.
This assignment counts as one of your "library
assignments," as indicated in the syllabus, and is worth 50 points.
Instructions: Choose ONE topic you are interested in that relates to this class (e.g. white collar deviance, prostitution, use of
ecstasy, school violence, the death penalty, tattooing, inequality and deviance, corporate deviance, etc) then complete each of the following tasks. On each sheet you turn in, write your name in the upper right
hand corner in the format Last name, First name. Put your copies in the order in which they appear on the assignment (e.g. Journal article first and Internet sources last). Staple your pages together in the upper left
hand corner and put SOC 436 in the upper left hand corner of your first sheet. (When you complete this assignment you should have a total of 4 pages stapled together.)
(1) FIND TWO SOURCES IN THE
FORM OF A SINGLE ARTICLE FROM TWO SEPARATE PROFESSIONAL, ACADEMIC JOURNALS
that contains information on the topic you have chosen. The journal can be a journal from sociology, criminal justice, psychology, or a related field but it must be a "peer-reviewed" journal. Magazine
articles WILL NOT be accepted. Also, DO NOT use a journal that is in electronic format. You are expected to go the shelving units and actually find the paper version of the journal.
Find the "abstract" for the article that discusses your topic, photocopy the page on which the abstract appears, and write the complete bibliographic information for the article (i.e. Author, Title of Article, Journal Title, Copyright Date) and the call number of the journal on the page you have photocopied. Use the back of the page to write this information if you do not have enough room on the front.
(2) FIND ONE BOOK in the UK library that contains information on the topic you have chosen. The whole book need not be on the topic but a reasonable portion of the book should discuss the topic your
topic (e.g. at least one chapter, or a significant part of a chapter, should deal with your topic). Select a page from the book that discusses your topic, photocopy it, and write the complete bibliographic information
for the book (i.e. Author, Title, the chapter or page numbers that deal with your topic, Copyright Date, Publisher) and the call number of the book on the page you have photocopied. Use the back of the page to write
this information if you do not have enough room on the front.
(3) FIND ONE SOURCE ON MICROFILM OR MICROFICHE that contains information on the topic you chose. Select a page from the
microfilm/microfiche that discusses your topic, print a copy, and write the complete bibliographic information of the publication (i.e. Author, Title of Article, Title of Publication, page numbers containing information
on your topic, Copyright Date) and the call number of the microfiche/microfilm on the page you have copied/printed. Use the back of the page to write this information if you do not have enough room on the front.
NOTE: This assignment will not be accepted late and deviations from the requirements (e.g. not using a scholarly journal or printing your assignment using an electronic version of a journal rather than
photocopying the paper version) will result in marked deductions from your grade. Also, deviations from the instructions given will result in a 20% deduction in your grade. You are being given ample time to work on this
assignment (including an entire class period) so there you should be able to get everything right before handing it in. Simply double-check, or even triple-check your work before turning it in.
