Arrange:
Selecting Layout and Browse Mode

The default layout for 'Beowulf Manuscript' displays the first page of Beowulf.

To select other layouts for all texts, press 'Arrange' and 'Preferences' before selecting a text from the 'Choose' menu.

Choose a layout for 'Single', 'Left/Right' or 'Top/Bottom' views from Setting properties... (these settings may be changed at any time by returning to 'Arrange' and 'Preferences').

If one forgets to set a layout, a popup window opens as soon as a text is selected.

'Single' layout displays one page at a time.

'Left/Right' displays two pages side by side in a vertically split screen, a layout that works best with large monitors.

'Top/Bottom' displays two pages in a horizontally split screen, an option designed for smaller monitors.

The default for loading the Edition and Transcript is one large file, but in Setting Properties... users with slower systems may instead choose to download ten small files.

If one forgets to choose, a popup window opens as soon as the user selects Edition or Transcript.

As always, the user may change these settings by returning to 'Arrange' and 'Preferences'. To activate changes, press Reload under 'Arrange'.

Another way to change view options is by clicking 'Arrange' and 'Changing view' to get the window for Setting view options....

Clicking Left/Right or Top/Bottom activates the Browse Mode, Master, and Right/Folio type features.

Browse Mode (Sequential and Collate)

Sequential allows one to browse in the same way as reading the codex, with verso left and recto right.

With Top/Bottom (recommended for smaller monitors) the verso is on top and the recto below. Sequential mode is preferable when viewing the Manuscript alone, or when viewing the Manuscript simultaneously with the Edition, the Transcript, or Thorkelin B.

Collate facilitates study of original gatherings by reconstructing sheets, starting with the outside sheet and proceeding sheet by sheet to the center of each gathering.

Set view option to Left/Right unless monitor requires Top/Bottom.

Use Goto to select a gathering and first folio (here the seventh gathering of Beowulf, fols. 171-178v).

In this example the outside of the outermost sheet of the seventh Beowulf gathering is made up of folios 178v-171r (a gathering begun by the first scribe, but completed by the second).

The inside of the innermost sheet of this gathering is 174v-175r.

Free in Browse Mode allows the image in each frame to advance independently (permitting, among other things, alternative collations).

Master controls sequential progression of images when viewing two texts simultaneously. Left/Top frame is default 'Master', but may be reset. When set to None, Master allows independent progression of texts (by Goto or << and >>).

Because the number of pages in different texts varies, it is best to set Browse Mode to Free and Master to None when viewing the following texts simultaneously:

  • Conybeare with Madden.
  • Manuscript with Conybeare.
  • Manuscript with Madden.
  • Manuscript with Thorkelin A.
  • Thorkelin A with Thorkelin B.

Folio type lists texts for selection:

For an illustrated example of how to view two texts simultaneously, see Viewing Beowulf and Edition.
