Beowulf Manuscript

When 'Beowulf Manuscript' is selected from the 'Choose' menu, the first folio of Beowulf (MS 129r, BL no. 132) opens:

The alphabet in the right frame gives access to the Glossary. Click any letter on the alphabet for a full glossary of that letter in the left frame.

For additional information on its use, see Glossary.

Click the highlighted box on the toolbar to highlight areas of special interest on folios, such as readings restored by the Thorkelin transcripts, readings covered by binding frames but now revealed by fiber-optic backlighting, or scribal erasures and corrections.

Click any of these outlined areas on the folio to open illustrated annotations in the left frame.

Click any illustration in the left frame to open an enlarged image with the note (click 'Close' to return to the complete annotations).

To hide the outlines on the folio, click the highlighted box again.


To go directly from the Beowulf Manuscript with image-maps, sidebar notes, and glossary, to the manuscript in its wider context of the Nowell Codex, click 'Beowulf' on the 'Arrange' menu.

To return to the environment centering on the Beowulf Manuscript itself, click 'e-Beowulf' on the 'Arrange' menu.
